HOW TO CATCH KINGFISH TROLLING with wind on planer! Catch Clean Cook
It was about time we filmed a KINGFISH CATCH CLEAN COOK video out of Hillsboro Inlet! Our go-to kingfishing technique includes running wind on planers with a sea witch, boone squid and bonito strip. When trolling off the East coast of Florida we like to hug the coast line between 75 and 150 ft of water using a number 4 and number 8 planer running at slow speed of around 5 knots.
Once our dinner was caught we headed to the fillet to table to show you how to steak a kingfish by first removing the head and tail, gutting the fish and removing the fins. From the fillet table it was straight to the kitchen to marinade our fish and then onto the grill for a charred kingfish steak paired with some grilled asparagus!
Our rig:
Rod: RainShadow Blank CFLLC-TB56XH-GB
Reel: Accurate 1000
Reel spooled with 80lb braid
Bridle: SPRO #4 swivels (SHSB-0405) with around 1ft of 200 lb braid
100 ft of 60 lb mono wind on leader
15 ft of 60 lb fluoro leader
Seawitch followed by Boone squid
10/0 Mustad J Hook 3407-DT (or long shank Owner hooks) with 175lb 1/0 Barrel Swivel
-Use Monel wire for bonito strip and barrel swivel
-Use bonito strips, mullet strip or bait strip
