In most of water and wastewater samples chloride is present in form of Cl- ion. these chloride ions can be very easily estimated titrimetrically using silver nitrate as a titrant. this titration basically is a precipitation titration since soluble chlorides are converted to insoluble silver chloride by precipitation. in slightly alkaline or neutral condition silver nitrate reacts with chloride to form silver chloride. potassium chromate is used as indicator. silver nitrate reacts first with chloride ions and all chloride is precipitated quantitatively as silver chloride. when all chloride ions are precipitated, it readily combined with potassium chromate indicator to give orange brown precipitate of silver chromate. this orange brown coloured silver chromate. detects the end point of the titration.
