Neil Young Archives III

Neil Young just released his third installment of his CD version of the Archives. This period covers 1976 to 1987 and is pretty fascinating to listen to. Yes, he puts tons of already released content on here. But there is so much new stuff to discover from legendary live performances to unlocking the mystery of unreleased albums, and especially in the Geffen period, what his artistic intents were outside of what we actually heard.

Just came across your post here, due to my interest in the this latest NYArchive. Great overview and summary. Longtime NY fan, though mostly focused on 60s/70s. But now I’m thinking NYA Vol.3 could lead me toward reexamining the 80s and beyond. Nice to encounter a knowledgeable Neil fan !

Good on you for your intense immersion in Vol. 3. I’m going through it much more slowly. I agree that as a huge fan, the repetition of tracks/albums is a bit frustrating. I guess it’s like what he did with Decade on a larger scale; a mixture of familiar and new/obscure. Cheers.

I’ve got the two previous archives set on CD so was a bit gutted to see this third set was massively expanded to 17 discs and a corresponding massive price increase ! Gonna have to wait for a price drop 😭

Great summary of III. I suspect the overkill of the original Geffen tracks is because this is the first time Neil has had access to release the Geffen tracks. Remember how Original Series 13 14 20 21 jumped right over them? He did not have the rights at that point which was just recently. This could mean we might see more action via Neil of that period soon if he has done more than just licence the tracks for III

Great review. Own the first two box sets but for some reason I’ve been hesitant to order this. You illustrated the non standard stuff and the archive series stuff already released. Sounds like another recap of his restless genius!

Thanks for the breakdown. Since it sounds like I already own at least 50% of this material I'll probably wait a couple of years until the price drops to something reasonable. I'm not a fan of streaming so I usually rip the CDs to wav files and store them on my pc just in case the internet goes down.
