This is really well made. I grew up as one of the few white-passing people (I’m Latino) in my school, and the only guy in the dance program. But I was welcomed so openly by every black girl there, no matter how different our cultures, and it gave me really incredible insight to how much they struggled but I know I will only ever grasp the tip of the iceburg. Things like wrapping their hair for days before they could get it done again so people wouldn’t laugh, or talking about nose jobs, it all made me really sad and fairly confused because they looked beautiful to me, but at that age and from the other side of the world you don’t fully understand that kind of prejudice or pressure yet. And every morning they’d re-do my braids because my hair isn’t textured enough to hold them properly lol but they tried, they taught me so much while just braiding my hair. I’m so glad I had those high school years, I think it shaped me a lot for what the world drills into people’s heads. I think this piece is awesome and I love spoken word, and I may not be able to understand from personal experience but I definitely have the upmost respect.
