Interesting tidbit and probably the main reason why MTL went for Danault. MB drafted him with Chicago back when he was AGM with them.

A fun one is how trading craig rivet to san jose got montreal josh gorges and max pacioretty who has now gotten montreal suzuki and tatar.

Edit: Thanks for all the likes everyone :)

Do the trade tree of Josh Gorges (SJS) for Craig Rivet (MTL)!

That trade tree is still taking shape over 10 years later

Bergevin, who was Assistant GM in Chicago at the time, really liked Danault after watching him play some games in the Q. He wanted to draft him with Chicago’s 18th pick but they went with Mark McNeill from Prince Albert. Who played 2 NHL games, none for Chicago, and is currently playing in Austria.

But Chicago also had the 26th pick so Marc got his guy. That’s why when he saw an opportunity to sell high and buy low and get Danault, he took it.

We are not worthy of the legendary Dutch Gretzky, he will be missed.

Whenever people ask how is Bergevin still employed by the Habs these types of deals are why.

Diaz was signed by Pierre Gauthier. But it became Bergevin's best trade.

Also Fleischman was a PTO that year.

One more funny details about this deal. Weise was a Ranger but couldn't stand Tortorella. So the Rangers traded him to the Canucks. Shortly after, Tortorella gets to coach the Canucks. Well well well Dutch, here we meet again. And Weise got sent to Montreal. Only to play with Michel Therrien.

Dude was hounded by bully coaches every city he went.

Why Wiese never legally changed his name to Dutch Gretzky, I'll never know.

Marc Bergevin is like a box of chocolate,
You never know what you're gonna get

Montreal is the big winner there, but don't forget the Canucks, who sold an enforcer and got Adam Gaudette, who could be one of the league's best 3C this season and still has room to grow

As a Habs fan, having this video drop *ON MY BIRTHDAY* is one of the best presents I could get! Thanks, Steve! You're right. It's an outstanding trade. I kind of like Bergevin's tenure in Montréal. He's a guy who got to do what few GMs get to do: fix a mess he caused. Usually, if you screw up, you're canned and go find a job elsewhere. And often times, the lessons you learned through your first time around, you get to apply them; it's why there are so many tales of "oh dang, why did we fire him then, he was so good for the other team!"

He's certainly a controversial figure, but I think he's a lot smarter than he was at the beginning of his tenure, he has a vision and a plan, and after more than a few ho-hum years, I'm actually really excited about the Habs future!

This is one that could be updated. It would be interesting to see where this trade tree stands now.

This trade looks even better now with how Romanov plays

Little update of this trade tree is interesting now in 2022. Danault finally signed with LA, but Romanov was traded to allow the habs acquiring Kirby Dach, which is gonna be interesting to follow thi year!

Title should have been "How signing Ralph Diaz gave the habs many suicde passes and the Danault"

You should do the Jack Johnson tree. From Carolina (yes Carolina drafted him) to Los Angeles
