Do you think Italy will really build this Mega Bridge? 🤔 And what about the massive fault line in the area?

Thank you for your support! 💛

As an Italian it's funny to see Salvini credited as a reliable source

They'll finish this project when the bridge to Messina gets finished. Oh wait…

"Even larger cruise ships could easily pass right through with no problem" Animation shows a small cargo ship not able to pass under without clipping a couple meters. Nice

I have been hearing about this project since my childhood. I do not believe I will see it in my lifetime.

I'm from the Calabrian side of the bridge (not exactly from Villa, but 15 minutes north) and people on both sides are VERY fiercely divided about the project. This is more an ideological battle than one about the structure itself. I am leftist and hate the governement, but the ones who oppose the bridge are the people on my political side because the one who really wanted the bridge more than anyone else was Berlusconi: so, it's an ideological opposition to the right which want the bridge and they come up with the weirdest arguments to avoid the bridge construction, like the protection of birds which might collide with the bridge.
Yet I also need to mention two typical traits of Italians: extreme whataboutism and even more extreme pessimism. In the first case, people appeal to other urgencies like education, healthcare and local infrastructure assuming that the money spent on the bridge would be taken away from these areas; in the second one, poverty in the South has been leading people for more than a century to believe that they are not worthy enough to deserve big infrastructures or businesses, and they are very selfish to such a point that the concept of "public good" does not exist and their life is just about protecting their small garden and gaining even the smallest advantage at the expence of the community. In this sense, there's a saying in Calabrian which recites 'E chi mi ndi futti a mmia', which in English translates as 'I don't give a fuck about it'.

Sicily's insular condition, thus the absence of this bridge, creates 7 billion euros worth of damage every year, a catastrophic situation. I hope this link between Sicily and the mainland will be built as soon as possible, it can stimulate the economy in a gigantic way.

This plan to build a bridge connecting Sicily to the rest of Italy has existed for so long and has been postpone for so long that there is now a saying of "I'll do it when the bridge to Messina is finished" which is basically the Italian version of "when pigs fly"

I currently live in Catania Sicily, and I’m so happy that my great great great great grandchildren will be able to use this bridge when it’s completed. 😂.

1:36 You cannot drive through the English Channel, you need to put the car on a train or take a ferry, just like between Sicily and mainland Italy!

As an Italian, u did a great job in highlighting all the difficulties and the pros and cons of the construction of this bridge which some of them are usually really hard to understand from foreigners. This is a really well done video

Italian company WeBuild that will make it, also made the doubling of Panama Channel, so no doubt it will be done.

The comment about being able to drive up to London is mind blowing. Imagine, streets connecting. Who would have thought?

As an Italian, and knowing the state of Italian politics, it won't ever be built.

Finally, there is a glimmer of hope for Silicians to be connected to the Italian mainland.

I'm from Sicily, we should broadcast your video on national TV. It's so detailed and very clear., great job! The ferry costs around $80 and it's super slow. We need the bridge, it will save everyone a lot of money and time, this is the perfect moment to build it.

I want to see those plans in details how they want to deal with the italian mafia? It would take Japan level of crackdown against the Yakuza since the 1990s/2000s. Corruption and organised crimes will be the major obstacle of this project.

This project was detailed completely in 1992. The Japanese studied this project to make their own (half the length) Akashi bridge which they completed in 1998. The bridge can absolutely be built as planned. All the rest is politics. So ignore any news on feasibility. The only point being that until recently it made no sense as there was no real highways on either side

Osmangazi suspension bridge in Turkiye is over the Gulf of Izmit (The Marmara Sea) and built over the North Anatolian Fault itself which is much more dangerous than the fault line between Sicily and Italy main land. And one of the Engineering company was an Italian company. Suspension Bridge on a fault line is not a big problem as long as they built correctly.
