This Will Change How You Look At The Ocean

The surface of the ocean isn’t flat. And no, I don't mean waves or the curve of the Earth. The surface of the ocean is ever so slightly the SHAPE OF WHAT’S BELOW IT. And that can tell us more about what's really happening down in the deep. When you look at Google Maps of the ocean floor, some of that information comes from using radar satellites to measure these small changes in the ocean's surface...

This short is part of Huge If True, our optimistic show about science and tech. We just made a longer episode all about mapping our oceans! Subscribe to support us and to see more.

I remember hearing that some Native Americans could tell whether there was water or land in the distance by the color reflected onto the underside of an overcast sky

I had no idea Natalie Portman knew so much about ocean topography

Your genuine enthusiasm about science is absolutely inspiring! It's slowly rekindling my childhood joy of just.. learning new things about the world around us.

'Estimate'. Measuring the ocean height / sea level rise by using satellites which are 250 miles up and passing over at 17, 000 mph when waves can be 15m high and there's also tidal range of 5-10m is a just an exercise in how to make enormous error margins. Her over enthusiam masks her naivity.

In our childhood we learnt about that water maintains it's level

I now wonder how the surface looks above Mariana trench.

As someone afraid of big bodies of water, this is even more terrifying

Someone help me out here. If there’s a deep trench in the ocean floor there’s less mass in that spot so there’s very slightly less gravity. And vice versa for a sea mount, more mass equals more gravity, but it seems like it’s the reverse when the ocean level is lower over the ocean trench and higher over the sea mount.

Why would a hole in the floor affect the gravitational field in a way that it creates a hole at the surface. If anything the effect would be the opposite. Because less matter at this point on the floor would mean less attraction at the surface, hence not a hole but a hill.
There is something wrong with their explanation here.

You really look like you talk about something you are passionate about. I like so much people who express their interests with passion ❤
