If you’re curious, the teen’s name is Sam Ballard. He had a little more mobility than the video implies, although it required immense effort. His friends never abandoned him, and the friend who made the dare said that he apologized to Sam and Sam just started crying. The friends would come by the hospital to watch rugby with him a lot. Sam had enough control that when he passed away, he was able to get out last words to his mother “I love you.”

Edit: there are some people in the comments who are blaming the friends, but I want to make it clear, neither Sam nor his mother ever blamed them. Everyone knew that it was a moment of teenage stupidity, and they were also drinking (they were 19 and in Australia, this was legal). Sam wasn’t really pressured to eat the slug either; it was more of a “hey, look, a slug” “I dare you to go eat that” “okay!” and that was it.

To people saying the kids should be punished and what they did is unforgivable, you’re entitled to your opinion I guess. None of us truly know the full situation. I think the important part is that the people who did know the full situation, Sam and his mother, forgave them. What each of us would do in the situation is ultimately irrelevant.

If anyone is curious, the Parasite he contracted is called Rat Lungworm. The host they usually parasitize are snails and slugs. Unfortunately for the teen, the slug he ate just so happen to have that parasite. As the name suggests, the worm usually infects rats (the rats eat the snails/slugs and get the worm) but because the worm was in an unfamiliarly host, it traveled to the brain where it did serious damage.

Honestly the thing I'm most amazed about is how the doctor's actually figured out that the strange pains were from this parasite so quickly. I swear to god if I had similar symptoms and I went to the doctor at his age they would've prescribed me antibiotics for a simple flu, gave me a shot I was overdue for and sent me home with a day pass from school.
