Bells have tolled in Hiroshima, Japan, to mark the 75th anniversary of the dropping of the world's first atomic bomb.

But memorial events were scaled back this year because of the pandemic.

On 6 August 1945, a US bomber dropped the uranium bomb above the city, killing around 140,000 people.

Three days later a second nuclear weapon was dropped on Nagasaki. Two weeks later Japan surrendered, ending World War Two.

Early on Thursday, Japan's Prime Minister Shinzo Abe and the mayor of Hiroshima joined bomb survivors and descendants in the city's Peace Park.

The park is usually packed with thousands of people for the anniversary, But attendance was significantly reduced this year, with chairs spaced apart and most attendees wearing masks.

Amazing how we pay respect to the Hiroshima and Nagasaki victims while all the innocent ppl that were slaughtered by the Japanese across Asia are either forgotten or erased from history. The privilege of being a close US ally

I'm Indonesian, one of the countries that were colonized by Japan.
Even the day when Japan surrendered, they still tried to cover it to Indonesian. Fortunately, someone heard that and we declared we're free from Japan immediately.

thoughts n prayers go out to the 300 000 plus lives massacred and brutally beheaded, raped in Nanking.
History is cemented in our memories and will never be forgotten, and one day Japan will have to apologise properly or face the consequences

75 years ago America ended the onslaught of rape and conquestof the Japanese. That empire was so terrible that it would force their young men to commit suicide in acts of war. This is not a sad day of death. But one of living.

Thoughts go out to those who lost their lives, friends, loved ones, son's, daughter's and all family members. One awful, thoughtless choice. My apologies Japan you never deserved that.

Was the United States wrong to destroy 2 cities and not just 1?? Seems like the second was for pleasure

Still don't know what the US was thinking, using this on a civilian area. At the very least this event makes most leaders think twice about using weapons like this due to the aftermath of Hiroshima. There was a lot more destruction than just the explosion.

To all the v' victims of Japanese war crimes, I say RIP. Mother nature will submerge the entire microJapan into the pacific ocean in the next 1000 yrs according to scientists then Japan would be 'SAYONARA' for good. That'll be good karma courtesy of our mother earth.
