How deadly is Covid-19?

Making sense of the coronavirus death toll.

Sources:

There are two ways you could assess the deadliness of a crisis like the novel coronavirus pandemic. One is to ask, “How many people are dying?” And the other is to ask, “What is the risk of dying if you contract the virus?” For months, public health officials were unable to fully answer either of those questions.

Now, with death certificates and antibody-survey data coming in, we’re slowly getting a better picture of Covid-19 mortality. As we explain in this video, that picture is of a disease that’s killing more people than we knew, but a lower percentage of those infected. Most places are looking at a higher death count and lower death rate than previously reported.

But the biggest challenge in assessing a tragedy like this is that we’re still inside it — and nobody can predict how many lives will be lost before it ends.

The background music and showing pictures of the people that have died at the end of the video makes me sad

I feel like if we had better leadership around the world the pandemic wouldn't be as bad as it is now.

So it's killed more people than we are aware of, but the death rate is likely lower than we think because more people have been infected than we are aware of, too.

In conclusion, more deaths than expected, less fatality rate than expected.

Everyone is just saying how this video is "yes but no", however, many fail to realize there is often no clear-cut answer to problems we face such as this. In the midst of the issue, it is hard to really say anything concretely. Those who do are swallowing their journalistic pride and just trying to get you to watch. A video like this that shows as many sides as it can in a short time lets you see as clear as ever even if that view is smugged and imperfect. It is better than wearing rose colored (or any other colored) glasses.
