Technically, Rick didn't leave Merle to die. He planned to free him after taking care of the walkers.
And then T-Dog lost the keys.

Guys, the reason Daryl didn't mention a lot of past friends they had is because he was only referencing those who were killed by or died as a result of the saviors.

I love how daryl is the toughest and most dangerous out of everyone in the show and yet he would never murder somebody like justin in cold blood he would do it then and there if he was antagonized in any other way

Dale, understood then. That surviving, didn't matter if they didn't try to build something after. Dale, was WELL ahead of everyone. He was in season 9, ahead even of Shane. We all just didn't realize

You can tell it hit daryl hard when Rick mentioned merle, even though merle was an asshole, daryl still loved and missed his brother
