Trudeau seen as “clown” after Canada House Speaker resigns over Nazi unit veteran tribute: Poilievre

Speaking in Ottawa on Thursday, Conservative leader Pierre Poilievre criticized Prime Minister Justin Trudeau for a delayed apology, after House of Commons Speaker Anthony Rota resigned for a Sept. 22 parliamentary tribute to a Ukrainian man who was revealed to have fought with a Nazi unit in the Second World War.

“The Prime Minister is seen as a clown on the world stage. But whether you blame him or the Liberal Speaker for recognizing a Nazi on the floor of the House of Commons, we all agree that it took him five days — five days — while he hid under a rock and let our reputation be torn to tatters,” Poilievre said.

Government House Leader Karina Gould responded by defending Trudeau, saying, “Every member of Parliament actually recognized that it was the Speaker's responsibility, that's why they called upon him to resign and that's why he did resign.”

After the question period, interim House Speaker Louis Plamondon stepped up to thank the MPS for their “unanimous support” and “the honour of being acting speaker for five days.” Conservative MP Andrew Scheer joked that he hoped Plamondon’s tenure will be “smooth” even though it “won’t be long,” while Gould congratulated Plamondon on his temporary appointment.

I disagree with opposition leader. Trudeau is not "SEEN as CLOWN", rather he is a CLOWN.

Calling him and his caucus a clown is an insult to clowns. They at least serve a purpose.

Karina Gould: "every member of Parliament recognizes it was the speaker's responsibility." Well yes, and every Canadian witnessed your disgusting suggestion that this incident be removed from all media recordings.

Imagine. There are people out there who voted for this guy not once, but twice. It’s mind boggling.

I have been watching international news and clown is being kind. We are the laughing stock of the World.

The media is not doing Canadians any favours covering for Justin Trudeau. The Media outside of Canada paints a much more accurate picture than our very own media and that is huge shame, and so is Justine Trudeau.

I can't believe that this even happened. I find Karin Gould's response to be absolutely appalling and for her to say we were all surprised. Why doesn't someone just point out the obvious elephant in the room to stop any denial. Russia was our ally and not the enemy during WW2. Even putting all his atrocities aside, we still gave him a standing O twice for killing our allied soldiers. These Liberals can play stupid or plead ignorance all they want but that is the main fact here with all others shoved aside. Was an absolutely sickening display of ignorance by all involved.

It's so much worse than that. The whole of Canadian parliament brought shame upon us all.

The ex-speaker knew once he read off the paper that the guy was a Nazi. The ex-speaker didn't prepare the speech. He didn't do the vetting -- yet he's accountable. He resigned because he blindly trusted the people who gave him that piece of paper. My heart goes out to him.

The full Canadian House of Commons gave a standing ovation to a man described by the Speaker as a Ukranian WW2 veteran who fought Russians.
Each of those MPs knowingly applauded someone they were told fought against the Allies, of which Canada was part.
They should stop passing blame, and each and every one of them should resign.

It's true, many international news media are saying exactly that.

Karina thinks if she kisses up to the temporary speaker of the house it somehow helps her look good. Wrong.

A teaching moment why learning history is so important. And even now so few are reminding Canadians that post WW2 thousands of Nazis were eagerly admitted while Holocaust surviving Jews were barred from entering Canada. And where is the outrage about monuments in "honor" of Ukrainian Nazis still present on Canadian soil while we prioritize desecrating other historical statues and changing "uncomfortable" names of our streets and institutions.

The PM was seen as a clown a long, long time ago. His pathetic "apology", blaming anyone other than himself is just another example. The trucker situation was the first to really stand out on the international stage as worthy of ridicule.

I can't wrap my head around how there are still millions of people who would still vote for this guy.

He should have had an emergency media conference and apologized within 24 houses of the incident.
