Ludwig van Beethoven
Symphony no. 5 in C Minor, 1st mvt.

Jeannette Sorrell, conductor
APOLLO'S FIRE | The Cleveland Baroque Orchestra
on period instruments

From the concert "Beethoven the Revolutionary," performed April 29, 2017
First Baptist Church, Cleveland, Ohio

In this performance, Ms. Sorrell seeks to evoke the revolutionary spirit and impetuous sense of timing which was described by witnesses who attended Beethoven's own performances. As a performer, Beethoven was known for pushing forward (accelerating) during a crescendo, and slowing down when the music got softer. This is described in many accounts by Viennese music-writers of the time.

A genius whose music has been with us since he was born 250 year ago!

I've never heard this piece before on baroque instruments. It's much less of a "wall of sound" in the loud parts.
Now I hear almost each instrument. Nice indeed.

I believe it was Christopher Hogwood and the Academy of Ancient Music who first performed Beethoven on period instruments. But that in no way diminishes what Jeannette is doing.

Love that they actually play the duhduhduh | DAAA figure as a Pick Up to the Downbeat like it is notated! Rarely have heard any orchestra play what’s written before for the opening theme (and throughout the development) - bravo! Fantastic ensemble blend

0:20 I like how the director went from a soft appearance to a “DOWN TO BUSINESS!!!” Mode 😂

It was spring in '62 I believe; my 5th grade class, on a Friday mid-morning piled into a bus, a field trip to Cleveland'sSeverance Hall for a free dress rehearsel of LVB's 5th symphony. From the get-go Conductor Louise Lane fanned his rght arm and with his baton...stirred me up royal with a dynamic display of this work, and, what became a tradition tossed his baton into the audience...just AWESOME! A pace that, more than natural, is inevitable.

Finally - an American period ensemble on a European level. The New World is, at last, awaking!

Although this is the epitome of a warhorse, there’s nothing jaded about this performance. It’s urgent, brusque, and a bit rough. It sounds new and strange—perhaps recreating a little of how it felt to first hear this in 1808.

Das Allegro ist sehr engagiert angegangen und der Wille zum Gedanken an Beethoven ist da. Für mich aber insgesamt zu undifferenziert. Vielleicht lag es auch am Spielort.
