00:25 Welcome: We continue to celebrate #miramay this month by releasing tutorials enabling you to stitch a Mirabilia Designs cross stitch. There is a playlist for this month so if you enjoy thi svideo please be sure to check out the other videos. Next video to be released within the week is How to Convert Skin to 1 over 1 Stitching.

03:08 The Beads
Most common beads are Mill Hill Beads however there are many others on the market. Main bead sizes are 15/0 (1.5mm) known as petite beads, 11?0 (2.1-2.5mm) known as seed, antique, glass, magnifica, 8/0 (3.1) known as a pony bead which can be in a size 8/0 or larger 6/0. The larger the bead number, the smaller the bead will be, think fabric count - a 15/0 bead means you can fit 15 beads per inch.

06:48 The Needles
Do I need a beading needle? If you are using petite beads (size 15/0) then you need a size 10 or beading needle. All other beads will fit on a size 28 needle. If you have troubles threading your needle, why not try a "Big Eye Needle" available on amazon. Common needle brands: John James, Tulip, Bohin, Beadalon, DMC and there are many others out there!

09:05 The Floss
There are 4 main types of floss:
1) DMC - single strand, can match your fabric, or stitching, or bead, can be ironed, you will have it on hand!
2) K O Floss - traditional polyester beading floss, can be ironed, available online/bead shops
3) Nymo Floss - flat nylon floss, very thin, can melt if ironed, theres a little stretch, available online/LNS
4) YLI or Wonder Invisible Floss - we all love to hate this option! Allows your to attach beads with no visible floss, but can be hard to work with due to limited visibility, nylon base, can melt if ironed, very stretchy, available online and quilting/LNS

19:50 Miscellaneous Tools
Bead containers: fabric trays, Beadalon mats, Tacky Bill/Bob Tack/Tacky Bob, diamond art trays, weighted dish

23:15 Fabric Count & Bead Size
Recommended fabric for Mirabilia and Nora Corbett Designs are always 32 count. Some people fear the beads will not fit nicely therefore will always stitch theirs on a 28 count. Some people will stick with the 32 count however will use only petite beads. The orientation of the stitched beads determines how many stitches will actually fit per square inch. The theory goes, if you are using regular mill hill size 11/0 you should fit 11/0 beads in one inch if they are stitched on a half stitch (angle) however most people feel you truly fit 9-10 beads. If you stitch your bead horizontally you can fit more beads in that 1 inch, i.e. 11-12 beads. If you are stitching vertical beads you end up fitting drastically less beads in an inch i.e. 6-7. If you choose to size up from a 32 ct to a 28 ct fabric please be mindful to use a fabric calculator as you will require a larger piece of fabric than the recommended size.

28:36 Bead Storage
We recommend Art Dot Storage Containers found readily on amazon. Other options are the clear tackle boxes people use for bobbin storage.

30:18 When to Bead
One can bead as they stitch but please be mindful these glass beads can be crushed. If you use a scroll frame, beading as you go could be a good option, but its not the best option for any frame that provides pressure to clamp the fabric.
Most people leave beading for last once the fabric has been washed (if you wash your finished pieces) and ironed. Post beading, most people do not iron their projects.
Personally I have started using larger Q-snap frames to frame up the entire stitched piece in one go and i can complete all the backstitching and beading without wrinkling my project or crushing beads.
Bead orientation: horizontal, vertical, leaning to the right, leaning to the left, directional. How you choose to stitch your beads can create the appearance of movement if beaded on an angle or directional. Mirabilia instructions are to stitch all beads on an angle with a half stitch (tent stitch).

Thank you so much for this video! I'm starting back on a project I started about 25 yrs ago but stopped because I ran out of the color of bead. I'm going to take out the ones I have put in if I can't find the same color and after watching your video I'm so excited to get back to beading again. I am so glad your video came up in my feed as a suggestion. I will definitely be following you. Happy Stitching! ❤

Excellent tutorial! I wanted to put some beads on a Christmas stocking I am working on. I was afraid to (never worked with beads before), but now I think I shall be fine with the beading. :) Thank you so much for spending you valuable time to make the video! ❤

Another great video. I've done some Mill Hill kits, but I still learned a bunch watching your tutorial. Especially with the orientation of the beads. So much to think about within the patterns. I love it.

I was Inspired by your video to count the hand dyed lugana to see if it had shrunk. Only by one thread. I then tried the mill hill beads size 11 on that linen and they fit, but we're oversized. I then tried delica beads size 11 and they fit perfectly!
I am going to try and convert to delica beads. Thanks for your tutorial!

I think I am addicted to your tutorial videos! Thank you so much for them, I hope there will be many more! I started te "letter S" and it goes really nice! I love stitching all my projects but some of them, for an unknown reason to me, are more satisfying to stitch than others and "letter S" is one of them! Now I am looking forward to the beading part and to your new video! Thanks again 😃🧵🪡

Excellent instruction! I just recently stitched a small Mill Hill kit with beading. I had no idea there was so much to think about when it came to stitching larger pieces like Mirabilia’s. This is good information to know. You have done a wonderful job explaining what one needs to know.

Thank you for this video! I bought my first cross stitch project involving beads, not the same as jewelry beading, so I was thrilled to find you had this tutorial! It is excellent!

Excellent tutorial! I have done a lot of beading over the years on Mill Hill kits, needlepoint canvases and cross stitch pieces. I learned several things from you. I had not thought to use several different slants or columns on one piece, depending on the design. Thank you so much!
