Study Series: 1689 Baptist Confession of Faith
Paragraph 1
A lawful oath is a part of religious worship, wherein the person swearing in truth, righteousness and judgement, solemnly calleth God to witness what he sweareth, and to judge him according to the truth or falseness thereof.1
Deut. 10:20; Exod. 20:7; Lev. 19:12; 2 Chron. 6:22-23;
The difference between Oath and Vow
Matthew 5:33-37
Background: Anabaptist's rejection of any kind of oaths
- Religious worship involves God
- There is no true worship that is not guided by the word of God.
- Calling God to be the witness that what he says is true - 2 Chr 6:22-23, 2 Cor. 1:23
- Lawful Oath: Wedding ceremony
- Unlawful Oath: Court hearing
- When we invoke God, we are praying to Him that truth may be shown
- Unlawful Oath - Ecc 5:2, James 5:12 - we call upon God with our hearts and acknowledge that God is the knower of hearts and intentions.
- An oath is honorable and solemn
Why are lawful oaths and vows as pary of worship?
- Because we call upon God
- if we do an unlawful oath, we call upon God to judge us.
Good news: God has sworn that Jesus Christ will be a priest forever in the order of Melchizedek - His priesthood never ends, God will fulfill His promise - Hebrews 6:13-20
