Heat Pumps and their technology have come a long way over the years. This video is about the backup heat, the technology, and thermostat compatibility. We go through dual fuel lockout temps and the backup heat operation for most electric heat pump systems. Heat droop and backup heat stage timer are covered too.

Thanks for the information. As you may know the temperatures are going to drop significantly in the southeast region next week. I will be away during the drop and I wanted to be sure that my unit would automatically kick on the auxiliary heat.

Should note manufacturers will provide a table or calculation based on height difference, pipe length, inside temp, outside temp, btus of indoor units and will give you a ballpark BTU output from the outdoor unit. Edit: they may also provide the efficiency along with the BTU output.

I have a T5+ thermostat.
Is it better to set the Aux Heat Lockout to 40F or turn off the lockout altogether?
Your advice please.

I live in Ohio and a bunch of homes around here built in the 1980s have heat pumps. As you mentioned, most people hate them because the technology wasn’t ready for prime time, particularly in our climate. But now the new inverter units are actually excellent. A well designed system should be able to cover >99% of heating needs during our winter

Any thoughts on window-unit heat pumps in cold climates?

I have a question about the Daikin systems. I just had a new dz17vsa installed and it's strugging to keep humidity at 60%, so 70 degrees now seems almost worse than my old single stage at 73 degrees. Is this normal? I plan to contact the contractor tomorrow but thought I would see others' thoughts.

Yeah, crazy cold in Virginia. Pertains to thermostat systems and not direct systems with heat pumps. So, here in Northern New Hampshire, just a bit, ok a hell of a lot colder than Virginia, heck a lot colder than Massachusetts. Direct set heat pumps do well.

How and What can I do to keep snow from dropping on top of my heat pump from metal roof. I need to know so that I can build it before next winter. I have a goodman 2022 2 stage heat pump and at 30 farenheit it starts to struggle to heat the house. If you live in Canada it's useless most of the winter months.

My heat pump keeps locking out in the winter, techs keep coming out and "charging" the system but it still locks out within a week. Any ideas what they're getting wrong?

I have a duel fuel system and hate the heat pump heat, so my AC guy told me to, in the winter, put the thermostat on emergency heat and that way you will never get heat out of the heat pump...sure, I will use more natural gas, but i will be warm and the heat pump wont run all day...In fact, it runs hotter for a shorter period of time..I live in Raleigh NC...Is that something you would suggest for folks in the Raleigh area? Great video by the way!!

If the outdoor temperature is between -5 celcius to +35 celcius can I use only an air to air heat pump through multi split ventilation system for heating a home?

Since ventilation system will give warm or cool air, control humidity and filter the air versus a radiator or under floor heating system?

For hot water I plan to use a air to water heat pump separately.

What do you recommend setting the crossover temp at for dual fuel Trane 18xi? I understand it might be preference, but looking to start somewhere and go from there.😊

New from fl, 608 universal cert... what happens during a power outage with dual fuel???

heatpump's ability to maintain in cold depends on sizing and how capacity is maintained as it gets colder - which varies depending on the design. most heatpump performance problems are caused by mis-use (setting back the temp, not just hitting cold) and lousy contractors.

Thanks for sharing this information. Can you do a video on how to clean the Blower Wheel in Mini split system. We have a Trane mini split with heat pump and it starts loosing heating around 30° outside and if colder it goes through a Defrost mode and shuts down then comes back up.
We are in Middle Tennessee and have very cold Winters at times. Thanks 👍

I have a 7 year old single-stage Rheem and it heats the whole house fine down to as cold as it ever gets here (-12C or so). I had the lockout set to +1 last year, but I've been feeling bad about emissions so it's set to -10 now and it's actually been fine, although it definitely runs a lot when it's below freezing out and the air it puts out does not get as nicely warm as what the furnace produces.
