Different Hub Sounds

This is a video showing the different sounds from the hubs we carry here at NOBL. Here is some information on each hub.

Industry Nine - 120 points, 6 pawl in 3+3 configuration, 60 tooth drive ring, 2 teeth per pawl. Can be run with 3 pawls for quieter operation with less drag and 60 points of engagement.

PROJECT321 - 216 points, 6 pawl in 2+2+2 configuration, 72 tooth drive ring, 2 teeth per pawl. 144 point 3+3 configuration is available and either loud or quiet pawls can be run in either freehub. *The higher engaging quieter version was tested but was running a bit low on oil and sounds louder than normal in the video.

Hope Technology Ltd - 44 points, 4 pawls, 44 tooth drive ring. Pawls do not have teeth on them and they engage all 4 at once.

DT Swiss - 18 point star ratchet system tested. 36 and 54 point is available and is louder. The teeth are increasingly shallower with higher engagement so they require more attention to ensure the correct amount of grease is present.

Onyx Racing Products & NOBL Wheels - Infinite engagement sprag clutch. The fastest rolling and least amount of drag. *We have free bear/hiker bells if you need them

This is a cool comparison. I think I like the DT Swiss’s deeper tone but the silent Onyx is cool for when you don’t want to hear your hub screaming.

The Industry Nine hub and the Onyx hub bave the best sounds (especially the Onyx hub).

Depends what its for. For DH/ Bike park I like a good buzz, same for a commuter bike as its like a built in bell. For AM/XC and Gravel etc I like silent, it lets you enjoy the ride and scenery way more- ONYX is the bomb for that and the instant engagement and low drag also awesome. As others have said Out of the Box sounds can be adjusted with grease or oil. For me the Hopes obnoxious and would need a change in oil/grease asap.

Onyx! It is an improved sensory experience with no sound and vibrations coming from the rear hub. You must experience it to understand it. I love my Onyx hubs! It's the future!

For those who don't like the noise, you can add a little bit of freehub grease to reduce the sound (in Hope and I9 hub)

I kinda like the DT Swiss. It's just enough noise that I know it's there.

I think you're missing the point by not giving the sound of the 'normal quiet' version of the Project 321 rear hub.

how do you count the pawls on freehub body? I've seen videos where they call a hub 9 pawls but I only see 3
