Jessica Voruda visits Homer, Alaska where our flight school is based. She's a pilot friend of mine that has a great Instagram with some amazing aviation photography and video. She was going to help me with the Great Alaska Aviation Gathering, and then the Valdez Fly-in and STOL Competition.
Flying in Alaska is quite different for someone like Jessica, being from Wisconsin and currently living in Florida. It can be a real challenge for people that aren't from Alaska, but Jessica always proves to know what she's doing with some great flying skills.
We'd start off in Homer, Alaska where the flight school is based, then work our way over Kachemak Bay to Seldovia, Alaska. You can only get to Seldovia by boat or plane, and of course we chose the best option by taking an airplane.
Then we'd do the difficult approach and landing into Seldovia. You have to hook around some terrain, get low over the village, and then manage your energy as you set down on the short airstrip.
Along the way, the scenery is just amazing.
Jessica and I then check out the town of Seldovia and get a bit of a feel for the 'pilot life'. That is, we take advantage of the fact we just flew here in an airplane, and now we get to explore. Usually that kind of travel would take a lot longer.
After our short adventure there, the weather lifted a bit and we were able to get a good look at the mountains. We were really happy to we got to do some flying up there, because the glaciers and ice field is just magnificent. Jessica was pretty blown away as well.
Hope you guys enjoy the video!
