my grandpa was the radioman on a B-17 shot down over germany before spending about a year from 1944 till the end of the war in a POW camp. he mentioned in an account he wrote of the time later on that he was applying to the higher ranking jobs as quickly as they’d appear in the air corps, including taking on a parachute assignment and after that becoming a radio operator. “The Army Air Corps was losing more Radio Operators in combat than they could replace, and when an emergency call went out for volunteers that could read International Morse code at twelve words a minute, he volunteered. He could not copy or send that fast, but it did not matter to him or the Air Corps.” he became a highly skilled morse code operator and actually worked on the ARPANET later on in the early days of computer networking.
