On this day in Tudor history, 7th November 1485, Henry VII's first parliament attainted King Richard III and his supporters.

As well as Richard, who was referred to as Richard, late Duke of Gloucester, and a usurper, the list of those attainted for their treason in fighting against the king at Bosworth included the late John Howard, 1st Duke of Norfolk, and his son, the Earl of Surrey.

Find out who else was included and whether Parliament's actions were unusual, in today's talk from Claire Ridgway, author of "On This Day in Tudor History".

Also on this day in Tudor history, 7th November 1541, Thomas Cranmer, Archbishop of Canterbury, visited Catherine Howard, fifth wife of King Henry VIII, in her chambers at Hampton Court Palace. Catherine had been confined to her chambers and Archbishop Cranmer's job was to get the now hysterical queen to talk, to confess. He visited her a few times over a period of 24 hours and finally got a confession from her. But what did Catherine have to say?

Lord Stanley seems to have displayed true championship calibre at what might loosely be considered a high-stakes late-1400's version of the Hokey Pokey, turning allegiance on a knife edge.

The parliamentary acts were indeed very wordy! I can imagine them trying to cover all of their bases.
I love your hair Claire!
Thank you for two videos in one day!!

Wow. Devereux, Catesby - you can see the seeds of more than a century of rebellion here. Fascinating, Claire. Thank you for your work and your insights.

Henry was exceptionally thorough
in clearing out houses and lands of. those not quick enough at being loyal, and then distributing them to those who had been quick enough to declare. their. allegiance which is exactly what his son did with the monasteries to ensure loyalties.

When you play the Game of Thrones, you win or get attainted. There is no middle way. ;-D

But, what wasn't normal was that Henry Vll predated his reign to one day before the battle of Bosworth and stated that everyone who had supported Richard ll had committed treason against him, Henry Vll.

🇭🇲🦘 So, this was the business attended to, at the first Parliament (at Westminster) of King Henry VII. Very interesting indeed.
WAS this

.... the Beginning of the 'Westminster system' of government, as used today? I only ask, as it is the Westminster System of Government which has been used (in Australia) since our first parliament was opened in Melbourne, Victoria, on 9th May 1901, by King Edward VII's son and heir.

We went from being a Colony to being a member of the Commonwealth, Australia. My grandmother lived near Melbourne and was 12 years of age when our first Parliament was opened. Our 1st Prime Minister being Edmund Barton. (Trivia: my brother's christian name is Barton but we call him Bart). So, our grandmother 'witnessed' history as it happened. Exciting times for our young nation 🇭🇲 and for a 12 year old girl.

I do hope that we (as a nation) never change our FLAG 🇭🇲 .. because it has the Union Jack in the top left hand corner, with the stars of 'the southern cross'. We are a southern hemisphere country, but we are forever linked to England, and the Union Jack depicts this. We did not have an official Flag until 1908 and I like our flag 🇭🇲 👍.

A fascinating video. "Thank you" Claire 💓👑👍

Wow! Henry VII attainted people for treason, but made provision for ther wives & families? That's not something I've heard of a monarch doing! And then he pardoned some of them anyway- I'm finding more & more reasons to like him! Calling Richard "Duke of Gloucester" tho- BURRRRN!!
Brilliant! I'm really interested in the beginning of the Tudor dynasty, & Henry VII, so it was great to hear something about it! :)

I assume you support this action on the part of Henry Tudor, as you consider Richard a murderer.
