Saddest part of LOTR that most people miss is when Frodo stands up at the council of Elrond and says, "I will take the Ring, though I do not know the way." The look in Gandalf's eyes tells us everything about what a heartbreaking sacrifice this is (and what a great actor Sir Ian McKellan is that he can convey so much emotion with a simple look). Frodo has already carried the Ring, so he knows what a massive burden this is, but he volunteers anyway.

The most heart-breaking scene in any movie, though, has to be in Hachiko when we see Hachiko after an off-screen fight with other dogs, and his harness is torn. That whole movie is utterly gut-wrenching and based on the true story of a dog who waited at the train station for his master every day for fifteen years after his master's death. His master died at work and never came home. Despite only knowing him for 2 years, Hachiko waited for him FOR FIFTEEN YEARS!!! The end of the movie is also gut-wrenchingly sad. They play happy music and try to show Hachiko's death as him finally re-uniting with his master, but the truth is that he died alone in the snow, unloved and uncared for for 15 years.
