How can the ecobee control by their sensors if at first either the ducting does not not motorized valves, each room would require the ducting to be remotely opened or closed with a motorized duct valve a synchronized motor valve kitted out on a duct open/close flap.
In the UK you would have either TRV's or a zone valve, There are a few in the uk emerging in the mainstream now, Genius hub have their own inhouse sensors TRV's, thermostat etc to make this happen. I think it's a bit spendy somewhere in the region of £1200-£1300 .
The ecobee would certainly be great if it had inhouse room duct controls wired in to react to the sensors but this is not mentioned which changes everything especially the price.

I have an electric heating infloor solution with 3 zones ( with 3 different thermostat ) Is there a solution to combine 3 thermostat WITHOUT having to buy 3x300ish thermostat ? I found tado thermostats which are not available in Canada :(

Now that nest offers sensors would you rate it as number one?

Do you know which smart thermostat provides the most options for complex programming? I want the ability to have better control of how my thermostats interact with one another in 4 zones. For example, when I go to bed, I want to be able to program the thermostat in my living room to stay on until the temperature on the thermostat in my bedroom equalizes to the temperature in my living room before shutting off. If my living room thermostat just shuts off and closes all dampers and my bedroom turns on at bedtime, the heat already built up in the living room is waited. As a programmer, I know I could logically do this, but am looking for technology that provides me with the programming options to do it.

Thank you for sharing the top 5! I was not sure which one to go with: ecobee3 or Nest!

If the Ecobee is mounted in the hallway and the remote sensor is located across the house, unless your heating/cooling ducts are separately controlled by location, what is the advantage of having the remote sensor?

I'll disagree on this one. I have them both and had the Ecobee3 first. The nest is just easier to use and has a nicer interface. To change the temperature, you turn the wheel and voila. I'm never sure what temperature the Ecobee will fall on when I try to change it. There's also a lag on the Ecobee that kept me wondering if the change actually took place. Same goes for the app. I live in a two story house with two separate AC systems so the sensor was not particularly useful; but I can see how some would find it useful. In the end, I had the Ecobee downstairs and the Nest upstairs... it took less than a week before I bought a second nest. Only sad thing is I loved having my thermostat included in home kit.

Another point why nest is not on first place. No homekit support. Good vid btw :) .. Oh and (at least) the Honeywell one is not avail in europe yet. plan to ask them, because it's a nice one .. thought e ecobee is also to my liking

I bought the eversense allure and it is by far the biggest pos ever! gives wrong temp readings and activates the heat before shutting off making the house hot. only stays off for 60 seconds then kicks back on putting major stress on the unit. going now to buy the ecobee3.

I suppose, for people who lead very complicated lives, there may be good reasons to use these products. Otherwise, and perhaps even then, it would seem unlikely that the high purchase prices would be returned in energy savings. Also, very precise control of temp. with A/C can have drawbacks when short-cycling of the compressors occurs. I, like many others, use thermostat swing programming to assure that the systems work more efficiently with less compressor wear and better dehumidification.

None of these devices have server failure support, or company failure support, that is, you cannot access them by smartphone, or tablet, if the manufacturer servers go down, or the company fails, like what happened with Revolv. Are there any smart thermostats that don't rely on the "cloud"?

One important area you did not talk about or consider relates to the smart thermostat being able to communicate with the home owner's smart meter. This connectivity is done via a "Zigbee" radio connection. The benefit to this is that users who have these Zigbee enabled thermostats can receive their usage and pricing information ( if applicable) in near real-time (e.g. within 30 seconds). This will allow users to make immediate changes based upon their energy consumption. The company named, Energate has a great thermostat called the "Holhom" model # FZ100 and it retails for $199.00. I have one and I love it.

Honeywell Prestige IAQ 2.0 with redlink is the best thermostat on the market. No other thermostat allows frost protection for humidity or allows you to change the control zone with a portable remote, but is not a Diy stat for most home owners

My fear with moving to one of the newer wi-fi thermostats is that if someone hacks your wi-fi they could disable the thermostats. There is no malware protection for these home products coming on the market.

Love my nest. I have whole house humidifier hooked up to it as well. Turns on when heat is on so i dont waste water. Nest smoke and carbon monoxide hooked up as well. Best purchase ever.
Just wish i can hook up my nagging wifes big mouth so i can remotely shut her up when i want too

Having a terrible time with nest support. After 3 yrs unit went offline. Nest senior support spent 2.5 hrs and could not fix. Was told it would take 5 days for engineering to look at. A thermostat should last 15 yrs. Do not buy nest products.
