it is about the focal point, the word back always follows the action word with focol point. when the focol point is here, use come back. when the point is there, use go back. at the time, it also points out the location where you are when speaking of. there are two locations, one is what you are talking about, the other one is the place where you are talking about the one.

The use of "come, take, send back" in the "Longman and Heinemann" books written in the ' 70s is not what you describe.
Example sentence 1: "Darwin took the bones back to the ship." (But he found the bones on the island, they weren't on the ship.)
Example sentence 2: "Martha and the school teacher came back to the home."(But Martha went from home to school and came home with the teacher.)
