The first disability insurance started in the Netherlands among shipwrights who often injured their shins using adzes. They set up a fund to support injured workers, making it one of the earliest examples of disability insurance.

I hope those workers had adzequate coverage.

If I recall rightly, adzes were known to be bastardful shinbiters

35 Years ago I watched a very skilled worker use one to cut the holes in a post for a traditional post and rail fence. He took about 1/2 the time I've seen a bloke with a chainsaw cut the same holes.

I’ve used adzes for the better part of 20 years to rough out spoons, bowls and dugout canoes. I’ve found that they not only need to be sharp, the geometry of the entry of the edge into the wood is important. Sometimes an inside bevel is great, sometimes outside and I have a few that are double beveled(usually asymmetrical), just depends on what shape/surface you want to make.

The difference between aXes and adZes, is if you lay them on a table one edge is on the X-axis and the other is on the Z-axis. 😂

I think I heard that somewhere.

I remember trying to earn the Inferno Adze in RuneScape, which was at one point the best woodcutting tool in the game.

I just watched this video and I must say and as a woodworker myself, you have perhaps my favorite ads! DaveyJO in Pennsylvania

I was green with envy for your wet woodworking tools. I adze-solutely enjoyed your dry humour.

I have a tile print from a series about jobs people had in the 1800s. The one I have is for carpenter/jointer and in the background you can see someone standing on a beam and using an adze :)

What I have found is that they're extremely specialized tools requiring a certain type for each job, this may explain why they were one of the first hand tools to be replaced. New bowl adzes are still quite common today and generally pricey.

I've got one, cut some steps into a down tree with it, worked great. Definitely not too many uses for it tho

Yeah, your not going to need one unless your building a log cabin from scratch or need to get rid of a Z in scrabble.

“And with a practiced hand…”
You’d probably not hit yourself in the feet every third swing? Good thing it’s dull and you got your safety clogs on! 😂

Be safe!
