Maren makes it… straightforward to use toner at home.

We are going to talk about how both semi and semi permanent dyes can be used to tone hair. I’m going to tell you what toner CAN do and what it CAN’T… because as great as I think semi permanent dye is, there are limitations. Whether you’re blonde or brunette to start though, there are lots of looks you can create DIYing your hair color.

Then I’ll take you through a step-by-step tutorial of how to actually apply Demi permanent hair color from mixing up your products to applying it to hair to rinsing it out properly… I got you covered.

This is something you can do at home for all my people that on a budget out there or trying to save money on their hair and beauty routines. That is the reason I have continued to do this myself at home even post-restrictions and lockdowns. You can do this between salon visits to tie you over or to replace them altogether.

Let me know in the comments down below if you’ve ever DIYed your hair dye and how it came out.

Thanks so much for watching !

—xoxo Maren

It's so nice to find a brunette who is doing this because every video I find is for blondes. I have the bronde like you and I was always like ok so what about me...what do I do? I'm not blonde! Thank you!!!

I can’t stress enough how much I appreciate clear straight forward videos like this. I just bleached my hair on impulse after a rough breakup and I’m left with the clearly bleached straw look which wasn’t what I was going for I want the salon ready look and your method is saving me some extra hassle. I don’t know much about hair but have watched so many videos on people explaining toners developers etc with all the numerology and I may or may not understand all that but what I do get is your before and after, your process and reasoning which is super helpful. Thank you ❤

This is the most intelligent explanation of toning I have ever heard. Thank you Maren. To demonstrate and teach is to Master. Thank you for bringing sound communications skills and teaching skill to sharing your Mastery of a tricky subject.

Finding this video just saved my hair. THANK YOU! I’ve had the same stylist for 8 years and I have been able to avoid an uncomfortable conversation. My highlights looked much more blended after she styled my hair, but maybe it was the lighting? In the natural sunlight, it did not look good at all. I don’t think she put any toner on the bleached parts at all. I’m 40, but I still haven’t worked up the nerve to speak up if I don’t like a service. Especially when it’s days later. Your video was very informative, thorough, and well paced. My 10 year old daughter was able to watch with me and help correct my hair, so this mishap got to become an unexpected bonding experience!

Thank you!! This worked really well for my hair. I recently got balayage highlights on my dark brown hair and it was a few tones too light for my preference. I used 7N (skin is warm toned) and I’m so happy with the results. Now my highlights are subtle and I’m back to being brunette ☺️

Great video. I see that you showed three shades, but I’m confused about which one you used.

My hair color is very similar to yours in the beginning, and I just had it highlighted a couple of weeks ago. Can you please share exactly what ratios and color numbers you used?? I love the aftermath

This wouldn’t affect the root color .. mine is 4 with caramel nightlights .. I’d like the highlights to be less brassy and have a richer tone to them ..

I colored my light to medium brown hair with a light ash brown dye and turned it almost black. I used vitamin c and dandruff shampoo and it lightened a couple of shades but left me with orange tones throughout. What color of toner would you suggest to use to tone down the orange brassy color without going too dark? Every light color of brown that I use seems to make my hair too dark.

Loved your video! Your hair in this video looks almost identical to mine and I loved your results! Definitely following your tutorial! Also I loved your explanation of the color theory at the beginning! Art is a big hobby of mine, but I still feel uneasy when tackling color theory of hair! This was the perfect explanation! Happy to find a fellow brunette-DIY-toner-girl! :)

If you end up liking how it looks with just the bleach, is there any harm in NOT using the toner to "complete" the process?

Which one of the colors did you end up using on your hair? I might have missed you saying that.

So you used 8 all over then 5 on roots ? You didnt use 7 at all. Correct ?
