What's the difference between a foundation and a nonprofit?

Want to know the difference between a foundation and a nonprofit? I recorded a quick video so you can understand the difference between those terms in case you are confused. It's important to make sure you're using the correct terminology when you're starting a nonprofit to avoid misconceptions from the public and your donors. You have to know the basics about being a public charity and private foundation to really understand the answer to this question so make sure you watch the WHOLE video.

I wish I found this video sooner, when I started I have the word "Foundation" all over everything (website, social media, marketing, automation, everything) before knowing there was a difference and now I am filing but want to file as a public charity which I will have to move forward with because it would be to costly to rename the non-profit at this point. This was fantastic, I'm wondering if my nonprofit needs to be a foundation and NOT a public charity after watching this. We are a group of comedians who do live shows and the ticket sales go to a different public charity each show. At this point we haven't even taken money for ourselves. Would we be better off registering as a foundation?

First, I want to tell you thank you so very much for your wisdom and knowledge. You shared information about writing a grant and I was APPROVED!!!! Now I have another question. My husband and I feed the homeless every other month. Family and friends donate food and toiletries. We cover most of the cost. I wanted to ask do you think it would be a good idea to get a 501c3 or public charity? We feed only about 65 people bi monthly. Wasn't sure if it was worth going through the process or remain as is. Thanks for the video! I've got a question. We have been hosting a Christmas event in our small community for 4 years now under the umbrella of the local chamber of commerce but now they want us to break off and do it ourselves. What set up do we need? Just a 501C3? It's all kind of confusing because we will be hosting fundraisers and taking sponsorships for the yearly event but need to remain tax exempt. Thanks in advance
