In this video essay I analyse why Hollywood is making so many remakes and reboots at the moment. Whether it is rebooting old franchises like Star Wars, or remaking old classics like Ghostbusters, the Jungle Book, Baywatch and more, I will try to explain the reasons behind this.

It's a shame there's barely an originality in Hollywood anymore.

This video needs to be on trending. This generation actually is most likely the "laziest" generation (but in this topic I'm pointing out to the producers/developers or should I say "creators"). Music, videos/movies, stories/comics, hell, even VIDEO GAMES and almost any entertaining stuff u can find have em remakes now. It's upsetting tbh. What's worse is that, if not make a remake out of an original masterpiece, they would make a part 2 or a sequel or some continuation crap which is more likely to be garbage as hell. (Not all but most are)
I love this content, man I hope everybody sees this. Shame on these "productions" these days

I've always loved sequels. Everyone says they hate them, and they might be right when they say that a film series tends to get worse the longer it goes on, but I can think of examples of sequels that I enjoyed much more than their originals. What DOES bother me is that eventually these film franchises stop going the sequel route and constantly reboot everything. Why do we have to have reboots, whether soft or hard? Why can't the sagas go on forever? Just recast the original roles with younger actors, and make the sequels period pieces if you have to. But keep the original universe going strong. No matter how old they get, the people who saw the originals back in the day still love them, and many of them want to see new in-universe adventures that are free of irony and don't have to acknowledge that time has passed in our world.

At the end of the day is everyone's fault, with the Hollywood studios that reject risky new ideas, the IP creators that deliver mediocre stories when giving creative freedom, and the audience that most of the time put their money on remakes of pre-existing stories rather than new ones.

Really, they always have had an over-reliance on remakes. There are a lot more of those than many realize.

As to the profusion of reboots, well, if the customers are satisfied with new versions of old stories, there's precious little motivation for Hollywood to take risks on new ideas.

The only original films that are being made these days are coming from Europe and Asia and I’m pretty shore whenever the Koreans or Japanese release an original film it will only be a matter of time before Hollywood do their best to butcher it.

Filmmakers have gotten too lazy to produce original ideas

Star Wars: Episode VIII – The Last Jedi is a sequel, not a reboot.

Tarantino said it best. It's like in the 60s

In the 70s there was a big cinema revolution. And it will happen again

This is very true. It''s one of the things that's really bugging me. Trump goes on about China copying everything, but in Hollywood they have no shame at all when it comes to staining original pieces of art. They obviously lost that perspective of it - they wouldn't copy a Mona Lisa(or maybe some of them would, but they wouldn't be seen doing it) but movies are just looked upon as IP and numbers, disrespectfully smeering up some of the masterpieces of all times is regarded as totally ok by many. Stanley Kubrick is probably turning in his grave, if he was alive he would have made a film about it. You almost have to look other places than Hollywood for originality these days

A a woman I think that feminism is good when it has the niche. But when it is mainstream everywhere and when every movie is putting women like "oh look, woman! and now let's continue..." It is visible even judging by how cameraman stops to how off some points they need to show.
Really good women story is crucial. Also I doubt that rich hollywood women can create such a story. Real life story must be born by new masterminds.

Greatest use for a remake (or would it be a reboot?) would be for a crappy movie that was not well-received, bombed at the box office, and only remembered years later for how bad it was.

Interesting thesis but the flaw I'm finding is that for the most part these remakes are not doing well financially and for the most part are loathed by anyone who likes the originals.

It's disgusting how those greedy thieves goes snooping around the dinner tables of original writers and directors, pick up their leftovers and sell it to their kids, who're not old enough to know they're being duped.

Ever notice how every single remake Hollywood does is from Generation X’s time frame? That’s why there are so many…because Hollywood hates Generation X with a passion.
