The actually interesting thing was that when Spacey was doing this, The Usual Suspects came out which ofc made Spacey a much bigger deal all of a sudden out from nothing. So there was a lot of fighting about keeping Spacey out of posters and starting credits all of a sudden. Kevin Spacey himself knew it's very essential for the reveil to work (being Better now) and it making the character and movie just better, so he kinda also put his foot down of not wanting credits etc. So since Fincher also had the contract of creative freedom, so the studio kinda had to back off with it.

The Alternate Ending:
Mills is about to kill Jon.
Instead of Sommerset throwing away his gun,
He steps in front of Mills and shoots Jon.
Sommerset looks at Mills and says, “I’m retiring.”
And, walks off.
