A horse racing track opened in Bossier City, La., in the late 1970s. I worked in Bossier during the 80s, and one day a guy came to my office, waiting to see the owner of the distributorship I worked for, to try and get him to finance the idea this guy had. It was the early days of PCs, and this entrepreneur had devised a computer program to let you handicap the horses prior to the race, so you could win. He left my office and I turned to another employee and said, "If it's so good, why doesn't he just use it and go to the track and rake in all the money?" The owner thought the same thing.
