Building the Shearwater 17 Stitch & Glue Kayak

Part Five - Preparing to Fibreglass the Inner Hull

In this video Jason discusses and demonstrates whats required to prepare to fibreglass the inner hull of the Shearwater 17 hybrid Stitch and Glue Kayak from Cheasapeake Light Craft.

If you're not familiar with the boat, its a hybrid due to its stitch and glue bottom hull and cedar strip deck.

This is the fifth video in a series.

I hope you enjoy this video. Thanks for watching! 🙂

The syringe "Tacking" makes sense. Was wondering how one lays the glass with the wires in the way!

I see that you have the kayak sitting in a couple cradles. Did you use the bulkheads to make a pattern for the cradles? If so, how much larger than the bulkhead should they be? They would probably really help in making sure that everything is lined up well before tacking.

If there had been a twist, is that something you could have corrected?

What would like to try making fiberglass panels instead of wood. Marine ply is hard to come by in Lost In Middle America...L.I.M.A., Ohio. A long table covered with Formica, wax it, then lay up your fiberglass. It would be one long peace with no seams. Just cut it out according to the paper pattern. The building process from there would be pretty much the same. Has anyone ever tried this?
