Study Series: 1689 Baptist Confession of Faith

Lord's day: 02/21/21 - Sunday School
1689 24:1

God, the supreme Lord and King of all the world, hath ordained civil magistrates to be under him, over the people, for his own glory and the public good and to this end hath armed them with the power of the sword, for defence and encouragement of them that do good and for the punishment of evil doers.

1. Civil Rulers are ordained by God
- All government is established/appointed by God Romans 13:1
- God has authority to ordain rulers in the earth because He is the absolute and undisputed Ruler of all
- Power is not bestowed by the people of the government but God (Isaiah 40)

2. Civil Rulers have ordained purpose
- they exist to glorify God and to benefit mankind
- they maintain civil order by encouraging good and punishing evil. Rom 13:2-4, Psalm 82:1, 1 Peter 2:13-14

3. Civil Rulers are bestowed with power
- God armed them the power of the sword to threaten and inflict physical harm
- John 19:10-11 - Jesus defined Pilate's power, that such authority is given by God in heaven

Several Errors:
a. The government is not in itself evil, it is not unnecessary evil. We are in this fallen world so we need the government.
b. The government ordained even the evil rulers (Nero, Nebuchadnezzar - Jer 27:5-6)
c. The Bible does not say that democracy is not the best or most God-honoring form of God
d. The LORD did not give the power of the sword to the church
- 2 Cor 10:4 - In advancing the Kingdom of God, our weapon is the power of the Spirit in the preaching of the gospel
- The Kingdom will advance not by manipulation or by force but by the faithful proclamation of the gospel.
- There is an overall court in heaven, apart from Christ's blood and righteousness, we will be judged because of our guilt and rebellion.
