The words “work for free” should never come out of someone’s mouth when they are expecting a product or service.

"Wow. You skipped right past offending me into confusing me."

When I worked freelance I always asked for 30% up front. If they said no then I knew that I would have a problem getting paid. I once delivered a gown and the client said that she would pay me next month so I said ok, no problem, then you will get your gown next month. Another client, after agreeing to a price decided to pay me less ( it was already a great price ) and I said ok. She then told me of all the clothes she was going to order from me for herself and her family so I said no sorry I don't work for clients who don't respect me.

When they say, "Work for free, it will be good exposure for you." Then people come to you saying, "Hey, are you that sap who does free work? I've heard of you."

Oh geez. PTSD warning needed
Especially 0:45 as a translator .. often clients bring me some google translated shit and grill me for hours about how I must be a shit translator because uh... they're not similar.
Maam, during my "time out" hope you've been supplying the end clients with lightening fast google translation that you so admire bc I now have a client that pays 6x as much and gives me ample time and freedom plus actually constructive feedback

4:48 Client thinks 4.15 is bigger than 4.7.
There's a lot more people out there like this than we'd like to believe. It's the reason burger places stopped offering 1/3 pound burgers. People thought it was smaller than a 1/4 pounder but cost more. Yes, really.

Guy enters meat market and buys 2 lb. of ribs for $2.49/lb., but complains, "Why are your prices so high? Ribs are only $1.99/lb. at the other store." Butcher asks customer, "Why don't you go there then, " to which customer replies, "I did but they're out of stock." "Oh, " replied the butcher, "You should come here all the time because when I'm out of ribs I only charge $1.49/lb."

And this is why I no longer sew for anyone who doesn't actually live under my roof, which means my husband and my cat. They appreciate what I do for them.

"you're not the only person we haven't paid and some of them are pastors. Do you think you're more important than God?"
No, but clearly *YOU* do!

Thankfully most of my clients are decent people. Its good to see these to remember that even in situations like these people aren't usually trying to hurt you, they're trying to get a better deal for themselves.

Working directly with people who value and appreciate what you do is one of the best things about working for yourself and working with people who will use you for their own ends is one of the worst things. If you're independent, you need to learn your own value and how to avoid or negotiate those who are only thinking of themselves in trying to meet their needs.

I HAVE HAD THE GUY ONE HAPPEN TO ME. Im a 23yr old white female. My dad is an alarm technician and I have been working with him since I was 16 and my husband in a hydraulic technician/egnineer for just under 10 yrs now (he's 29). I can install and entire alarm system & have helped strip hydraulic cylinders, and I've been put in charge of sorting all the tools & sundries (meaning you have to know about it)....

and I still get the "You're a girl you wouldn't know" attitude.

I wear steel capped boots mon-fri. Like dude I probably know more about it than you in your flip flops.

Edit: Extremely ironic and hilarious that I mispelled 'engineer'. I was typing in a hurry haha.

Once upon a time, I was a partner in an home construction company. My partner gave a very good deal to a friend of ours that would have paid us nothing but would’ve paid our workers what they were usually paid. (We paid union wages plus 3% and Dobie dues) The price was $60K and he asked how much would it be if he helped. My partner said $75K and he laughed and said “you’re funny”. My partner said “I’m not joking “ and we never took the job. 3 months later he begged us to fix the mess that the other contractor made. We didn’t.

One company I made prototypes for loved my work and then asked if I could do a lot more for them. They then added that they would like me to lower my prices so I said no problem, I'll lower the quality and cut out the detail. They said no "we love the quality of your work and the detail", I said well that's why it costs this much. They had to get me redo a lot of work already done and paid for by another freelance whose work they had liked until they saw mine.

When I had my business, charities would ask for freebies in exchange for advertising, I would say I would donate product but only on condition that NOBODY knew which company donated it. Before I introduced the "anonymity clause" I'd get dozens of subsequent requests from other charities, schools, sports and political organisations (and random people) saying "You donated to *** and we wondered if you could do the same for us!"

Here's a story. I have a very small side hustle to supplement my pension. (I make milktarts). I sell them over the weekend to campsites near where I live so I always have rotating business. Recently I wanted to put my price up to ZAR 80 as opposed to R70 but I was scared it would scare my customers off. We're talking here about glamping villages... Anyway, my friend, who owns three of the campsites came back one evening with a BEAUTIFUL empty blue glass bottle she'd found in one of the trash cans. It was an empty vodka bottle. So the next time I was in town I walked into the booze store, found a full bottle and looked at the price. Almost 500 ZAR! For 750mls of vodka! Decision made. (Makes giving change easier too!)

Oh that last one. My first permanent job I almost got disciplined by the marketing manager for using "the wrong Pantone shade of green" - this was for the company logo on a computer application back when the palette only had 256 colours... Fortunately my manager stepped in and gave the marketing manager a very stern talking to

Yes, PTSD warning needed. I worked for “the client” mentioned in many of these. His SOP was to tell me to call the vendors and get charges reduced, even if the product was exactly as promised. Only time in my career (I’m retired) that I literally told the owner to take the job and shove it. Agreed to come back in to tie up loose ends - didn’t want to screw my coworkers - but only at times when he wouldn’t be there.
