One of the biggest legacies of the 100 Years War was the story of Joan of Arc. Up to the point where Joan came to the fore-front of the French Army, the English Army were winning heavily. However Jane's leadership helped to turn the tide in the war for the French. She is remembered today as the teenage peasant girl who took control of the French Army, however her story began when she was just 13.

At the age of 13 she experienced visions and was visited by 3 saints. They told Joan to lead the French Army and expel the English from her country. Following this she managed to convince a commander to provide her with an escort to the Dauphin, Charles. Here she persuaded Charles to give her control of the army, and she set her sights on lifting the Siege of Orleans. She successfully managed to end the siege and saw off the English. She then carried out further military campaigns being just a teenager at the time.

She dressed in male armour and clothes at the time to disguise herself and protect herself, but she would later be captured and turned over to the English. The English deemed her to be a witch or a heretic as they could not believe that a teenage girl had managed to defeat part of the English army. They put her on trial and Joan although she put up a staunch defence was found guilty of heresy and she was sentenced to death.

In front of a crowd of around 10,000 in Rouen Joan was burned at the stake in horrific fashion. Many of those who witnessed the burning of Joan said how they made a mistake and executed a saint.

Burning at the stake has to be one of the worst ways to die because its a slow painful death.
People think we have a hard life these days but its nothing compared to what it was like back then.

You can stand by the spot where she was burned in Rouen. It's quite sobering to stand there and think that around 590 years ago a young woman was burned to death right there.

Burning a human alive is absolutely horrific. The worst of mankind.

And there are still people who are just as sick and warped today as the one's that did this to this poor young lady. It truly saddens me.

My history teacher in high school. "Joan of Ark lead the French army by age 16, what is your excuse?" lol

I cried when the description of her death went on. I found it not only terrible but so sad. She was a Christian and called out to Jesus as she burned alive. RIP Joan. A fallen heroin and a fallen Christian sister.

I, as a Muslim, spent few hours today to watch documentaries about her life. I learned about her before in history lessons, but never studied her life and tried to understand what she stood for and what was her actual character. I always respect pious people, whether they are Muslims, Christians or Buddhists, does not matter. A pious person, a person who is true to his religion, dedicates his/her life for higher noble causes always inspires me. And what a woman she was! By the way, the way that she said she heard voices and she had visions are similar to Prophet Muhammd's first experience. Although we Muslims don't believe in sainthood, I believe her that she had a mission. May she rest in peace. May Allah (god) have mercy on her soul.

It is not uncommon for people who tell the truth to be persecuted by those who do not want to hear it.

Edit: The 120 people who have down voted this comment helps prove my point.

On behalf of my wife Joan, she passed away on February 21st of this year. Her and I really praised Joan of Arc. My wife always thought she was Joan of Arc not cus she had the same name more so because, she was brave soul for women who continuously get mistreated even to this day, so on behalf I Timothy and my wife Joan E Marrero who passed away recently we really love and respect you Joan Of Arc and you just like my wife JoanE will never be forgetten.

It's crazy that they capture an enemy war leader who has led attacks on their troops but they charge her with "Wearing mens clothes" of all things.

The term 'English' can be misleading. The Plantagenet, a French Norman dynasty ruled England, and this was largely a war of control over ancestral territories between the mainland French and the French colonialist rulers of England.

I’m glad the commentary got that correct. The records show her last words were, “ Jesus, Jesus, Jesus!”

The fact that someone tried to extinguish the fire but was stopped by the guards is kind of heart breaking

Jeanne's stake was deliberately built too high so that she was actually burned alive and not suffocated by smoke as was customary. She was also made to wear a sulfur-sprinkled robe.
