IN this video Heimler shows you two examples of how federalism has played out in the United States over the last ten years. The first example is the United States' on-again-off-again relationship with the environmental regulations that come with membership in the Paris Agreement. The second example is the legalization of marijuana in some states while it remains illegal federally.

In this way, states are like laboratories of democracy in which the federal government can see how certain places play out before deciding if they're a good fit nationally.

constitution:
-10th provision explains federation (reserved powers r for the states)
-14th: bill of rights to states
-commerce clause: congress regulates commerce
-necessary and proper clause/elastic clause
-full faith and credit clause: states must respect each others laws

cases:
mclough v md: established that federal law supersedes state law aka supremacy clause, and (used the necessary and proper clause to make a bank)

us v lopez: gun free school zone laws passed by federal government (using commerce clause), a kid was charged by both states and the federal government and ruled in favor of the states (fed govt can not make laws abt guns)
