Backing Up & Cloning your MAC Hard Drive using SuperDuper

In this quick tutorial I show you how to backup/clone your Mac HDD/SSD to a new HDD/SSD. This is useful if you want to install a new HDD/SSD and dont want the hassle of installing all your apps again or if you want to try upgrading to Mac OS Catalina and dont want to try this on your live system.

Any idea why the progress is all Grey yet the counter keeps time? Been sitting there for almost 30min and it still hasn't turned green for the prepare to copy part. I'm just gonna let it sit for the night and see what's happened tomorrow

It's a slow iMac running big sur. I expected slow but not this slow. After all I was able to install the software rather quickly compared to this.

hi. i see that you cloned the Data volume only. no need to clone the other one? another question: in setting up a fresh install, i like to clone different stages. for example, the first clone will be right after a fresh install. the next will have all essential apps and prefs set. then i clone another one with all other apps. do you know is Superduper can streamline this with Snapshots? it would be nice to have an initial clone and then a few smaller snapshots, which would dramatically reduce the HD space needed. thanks.

I might use this to clone my Lightroom external hard drive to a larger capacity solid state drive. How safe will the transition be? Will my hierarchy in Lightroom be saved?

after I copied with super duper on the external drive, can I remove the old drive and install the new one insde the mac? will it boot right away?

My Mac has an internal 256 GB SSD, and I save all my data to an external 2 TB USB HDD. The external drive has 1.5 TB free, so I was wondering if I can re-partition the external drive so that I can backup to the new partition? I want to "downgrade" from Catalina to Mojave and didn't know whether I needed a new, clean external drive?

Can we only make a disk to disk copy or copy a 250GB disk to a 250Gb partition of another2TB disk? This question has been asked earlier but not properly replied?

This seemed to work fine (cloning my HD to external SSD) but my mbp shuts down when I try to boot it from the external SSD now... I'm trying to test it to confirm the cloning worked before installing the ssd into the Mac. Any suggestions on what the issue might be? Thanks!

Hi john i was just told to get another OWC and use Super Duper to make a backup copy of my iac in case of system failure. The tech said i could also backup my other external audio work drive on the same new OWC as Super Duper copy? is that correct? So i can put super duper backup and my work audio drive backup onto the same OWC external and keep refreshing backups as needed? What is your suggestion for a music studio backup? OWC super duper and backblaze online enough? thanks

So my problem is that I'm trying to copy my mac HD onto an external drive but when I click on the "copy" drop down, the Mac HD doesn't show up. The only thing that shows up is superduper and disk image. Any thoughts?

Hello John - Thanks for the video. I created a clone of my Macbook Pro following your instructions to an external USB drive but it takes forever to boot up and it's Is thisjust the way it is with a cloned drive?

Just need software that keeps an INDIVIDUAL file backed up automatically to an external drive. This seems to back up the entire drive (or you have to learn some rudimentary commands to write your own back up solution to accomplish this very simple task- that should be an option but it ISNT in S.D.!?!?)
