When Nvidia needs Quake II to convince people to invest into RTX...

Quake II was the first serious game to use 3D acceleration. Quake I had it bolted on after. Supporting PowerSGL, Glide, and OpenGL meant nearly every 3D accelerator in the day maybe could play it, unless you had an S3 Virge (you got to play it in software).

NV had the 4MB Riva 128, ATI(AMD) had Rage Pro, 3DFX had 4 MB Voodoo, Intel had the i740 and PowerVR had the SGL2 4MB Matrox M3D.

I had the latter, but also running on the Cyrix P166 133 Mhz the fpu was so godawful as the PowerVR chip needed a strong fpu to run it. Then my parents upgraded to a PII 266 for Christmas 1998, dropped in the Matrox M3D and wow, I could play it accelerated up to 1024x768. However didn't have bot support yet, so for a kid on a farm, playing online was a rare pleasure as it took up the phone line for the blistering 31200 bps and 150 ms ping times. Then a new game launched, offering a story, great graphics with reflective surfaces, Unreal.

Years later I still periodically pickup Q2. For all the graphical prowess Unreal had, the gun sound was terrible. Q2 by contrast had percussion with every gun, and with now added bot support, more maps, a high speed internet connection, and a surprisingly resilient community, I keep going back to it twice per year.

Maybe NV releasing Ray Tracing on this game is them trying to forget the past and how awful the game looked on the Riva128. The Rage Pro from ATI was the worst for Q2.

play a 29 year old game at 90 fps 1080p, totally worth spending 3000$ on that pc

This makes me wonder what the framerate would be without raytracing.

I wonder if this will work on all the cool mods that were made for q2...?

So a 97 frame on a RTX 1080 TI that a whole lot of money to get good frame rates. Lets see what its like on more reasonable cards.

All I can think about is RTX Action Quake now...

Nvidia : you can play a 20 year old game on are $1000 video cards @

Isn't that a bit low for that kind of hardware in such an old game?

Can we get a download already. They're milking this computex as there's literally no news from them. Which is fine, but don't artificially delay an opensource project.

Turn off RTX and you can play Quake 2 at 1920×1440 on a Radeon DDR. If you lower the resolution to 1280x1024 you can run it on a Voodoo 3 (or TNT2, Savage4/2000, G400, or Rage 128). If you just want to play the game at 640x480, all you need is a Voodoo 1, Riva 128 ZX, or Rage Pro.

... to cache in on nostalgia and ad raytracing to not demanding things just to sell a 1500+ graphics card is just below low...

sub 100 fps on a old game vamped with RT 'features' aka 'kill your frames feature and trash your RTX 2080 TI' .pfff. Man RTX was such a joke launch. I'll stick to my NO RTX Club Inno 3D Ichill GTX 1080 TI 4X Ultra.

Quake II is over rated tbh, no where near as good in level design, atmosphere, enemy roster or creativity as Quake I. That rail gun was great, though.
