I started thinking seriously about retirement after a major health event. I am much healthier in retirement because I lost a boatload of weight and became more active!

I am so glad I retired at 52. That was 7 years ago. A few weeks ago I was diagnosed with cancer. All that worry about planning and will I have enough money to live into my 80's. Yeah, that now changed. Things change when doctors start talking about 5 year survival rates. One thing for sure, no one can take away those 7 years of care free retirement. I did everything I wanted. Now, treatment is going to severely limit what I can do.

Dr. Peter Attia's book is all about "Healthspan". Yep, I lost 30 lbs within 3 months of being laid off and didn't think I was doing anything different - it was all stress. I was in a national group that was tier 3 support and there was always there was always a SECOTA (Super Emergency Cucumber Of The Apocolypse) somewhere. I do about 2 hrs of exercise most days and strive to eat "real" foods too, . If it's in a box, it's a product, not a food! 😂

I am using the 3 percent rule, when I retire soon. I need to make 3 percent total return to pay my expenses. Anything over 3 percent is gravy and reinvested. 10 year cash reserve for down market. No debt.

Get healthy now *before* you retire. Very good advice. I’m at the gym 4 or 5 times a week doing weights and classes. I take walks on lunch breaks and after dinner. It’s embedded in my lifestyle now and will continue into retirement. My diet is mostly plant based with some meat and other good protein sources.

I have been following you for several months and have really appreciated your content and the “New Retirement” recommendation, which I have just started to fill out. I think this is one of your top videos for reaching and helping those of us who still could make more money but are not sure we truly need it. I loved the metaphor regarding carrying around the 10 pounds of weights. So true. Even while practicing a profession that I love, and caring for people who are awesome. Now I gotta go work on New Retirement! Thanks.

i'm a single day into retirement (age 57) and altho i haven't fully realized everything Joe has said in this video, i can easily see the priority list taking shape. i wish i would've discovered his videos 2-3 years ago b/c i could've/should've retired then. still, after watching his and other videos, i retired 5 years earlier than planned. thankfully i've been focusing on my health for the last decade but definitely need to double-down now. thanks Joe for helping me get the confidence to take the plunge💰

Today wraps-up week 3 of retirement / "Gentleman-of-Leisure", and the reduced stress has resulted in better sleep and lower resting heart rate!! And "yes" I was one of those >200 that Joe coached.

My husband is retiring in 5 months. We went to Europe last month and we couldn’t keep up because we are older. We really felt our age! It was harder to walk 15, 000 steps every day for 2 weeks.

Joe, thanks for another useful video! For fellow viewers: Back in Feb 2023, looking to retire the following June, I experienced a non-emergency that landed me in the ER. Retirement paperwork in, an engineer with many projects to close, and just moving into a newly stick-built home, my stress was off the charts. Turns out, so was my weight and blood pressure. That same month I decided to get a Coronary Calcium Score test. That was the Mike Tyson gut punch I needed. Today, after Ruck Sacking 2x p/week, 2x p/wk weight training, cycling, and totally eliminating all items with sugar or added sugar (high-fructose CS too), and even making our own sprouted grain breads, and ketchup (no HFCS), I am 85 lbs. lighter, have a BMI of 19, from BP to bloodwork at levels not since I was a late teenager and now I am 65ys old. I have been on a basic ketogenic diet, and totally eliminated my insulin resistance (driver of my CAD). Always physically active, but as Joe states (always on the hamster wheel), was on a low-fat diet(as I was told). Also, a follower of Dr. Peter Attia, as well as many other doctors and scientists. As learned from Peter Attia, healspan is just as important as lifespan! Two sentences to live by: 1) You will NEVER outrun(exercise) a poor diet, and 2) There is NO pill/drug/operation to comes anywhere close to the positive benefit of a healthy lifestyle. Plan well that you do not need the additional income, but if you do, you can always make more money….you cannot make more time.

I had to stop Ozempic/Wegovy 6 weeks ago due to several kidney stones and bloody urine over a year span. My sister has a rarer side effect of nerve pain, but so far it’s still worth it to her for looking 20 years younger.

Thanks to your videos I spent as much time planning my health in retirement as I have my finances. Run 3 mornings a week, lift weights 3 mornings a week, and give my body a break one day a week. I really need to address my diet. I get bored, at all, and I find myself foraging the pantry looking for treats.

I’m one of those people that are killing themselves for health insurance. So true!!! 10-12 hour days. No time to work out. Easier to eat unhealthy, super stressed. That is so true!!!

Great points.

I wonder if the people who don’t retire ever figure out how important their health is too.

Always appreciate your content Joe. This video was very timely for me. Today is my one year retirement anniversary. Loved my first year! Makes me want many many more!

Overall Health: 90% kitchen/10% gym. That's a great ratio I've heard before and agree with it. Hopefully for you the current diet regimen you're on is sustainable. I've seen so many do that, and once they wean from it, the body says 'here's your 40 lbs back plus an extra 10 just to show you who's in charge!' Everyone is different, and different things work for different people. For me it's making wise choices, nothing fad and using table muscle - you know, what our ilk heard growing up - use the muscles you need to push away from the table! Like you, I've been exercising since in my teens. Running and DNA destroyed my knees, so don't do that anymore on the new set I have. Still, in the gym by 5:30 AM M-F mixing it up with elliptical, recumbent bike and depending on the day weight training for which muscle groups I'm working on. I know once I pull the trigger and enter retirement freedom, I'll tweak the nutrition part which is needed. Thanks Joe for another great video!

I knew when I had enough from the Fidelity RIP. My tax deferred retirement account was through them. Information I put in was very conservative. I added local income taxes that don’t exist. I lucked out. My pension covers all my expenses. I do wish I had spent more time on the healthcare I did walk a lot and I was low carb for like 6-8 years before I retired and had a large green smoothie every day. When I retired I wanted like some potatoes and bread. Maybe some Chinese or fast food. You can guess where I am now I had other bad habits also. I think I am actually very lucky where i am right now, with an unexpected health condition. I see a lot of health conditions out there when I go to Costco or Walmart. But I know I am going to keep walking, keep getting out. Keep trying to make my dreams come true. I am not dead yet!
