Alone and Sick on One of the World's 'Most Dangerous' Roads | Full Film

I embark on an epic journey along one of the world's most notorious roads, leading deep into the breathtaking Skardu region. But just how dangerous is this infamous route? Join me as I push through its twists and turns, uncovering hidden gems and jaw-dropping landscapes from Gilgit to Skardu city on Strategic Highway 1 (S-1). From heart-stopping moments to the awe-inspiring beauty that awaits at every stop, this is an adventure you don’t want to miss!

Have you ever been somewhere so beautiful?

The Gilgit-Skardu road is considered one of the most dangerous in the world due to its extreme terrain, with steep cliffs, narrow passes, and unstable conditions prone to landslides and rockfalls.

Poor road infrastructure, including gravel sections and potholes, adds to the challenge, especially during harsh weather like heavy rain or snow, which can cause slippery surfaces and low visibility.

The road’s remoteness means few services or emergency support are available, and frequent heavy traffic from trucks and buses on narrow, winding sections further heightens the risk of accidents, making the journey treacherous.

The Gilgit-Skardu road underwent a significant renovation in recent years, significantly improving safety and accessibility.

The renovation included widening the road, paving previously gravel sections, and reinforcing areas prone to landslides with protective barriers. Bridges were also repaired or replaced, and drainage systems were improved to handle rainwater and prevent flooding.

These upgrades have significantly reduced travel time and enhanced the overall experience for travellers, allowing for smoother and safer journeys.

However, despite these improvements, the road still retains some inherent risks due to the challenging terrain and unpredictable weather, meaning drivers must remain cautious.

The renovation has also boosted tourism and trade in the region, making Skardu more accessible to visitors and helping to connect the local communities more effectively.

Man, I could watch hours of these types of videos, just driving through the mountains and valleys, eating at random food corners in these remote areas, and showing the beauty of nature from all parts of the World. Plus, Karl's commentary also makes it more interesting.

As an American/Puerto Rican foreigner. I am married to a Pakistani woman and live in PK on and off. I did this trip about a month ago myself drove from Karachi to Skardu with the family. Good times. Watching your video reminds me of many the spots I seen on the way to and from. Great content and love your commentary while driving. I made the same mistake following google maps for Glamps. We just called the place and they guided us properly.

Nice to see that even in the most outermost reaches of Pakistan-India, there are English speaking officials on hand and who follow passport-border formalities, human politeness and hospitality. Thank You again for showing us your trip..!

Best yet! The amount of deaths building the roads throughout the Himalayas are uncountable. My turf and 3 decade experience is in Bhutan which is exactly the story. More books, and certainly more films, should be done on this subject to memorialize these workers. Amazing sacrifice.

Man, Karl Rock, I don't know when I or my family will see travel to all these places...it may not happen in our life time and it's very unfortunate. But, thank you so much for what you are doing. I am getting thrilled for sure while watching these videos but it's very emotional as well. To see you literally riding along the Indus river, is a tear jerker for me. That's where our story began, that's where all of our ancestors lived. India lost this sacred place because of partition. Our temples, our entire civilization, everything starts from there and today we can't even go and see all them.
From the depth of my heart, genuinely, Thank you so much.

I have a big smile on my face throughout the video- I love the high deserts of the Himalayas! I just came back from Ladakh and I loved it so much I’m going back in February for the Losa festival and also to trek with a guide in search of snow leopard. I have a five year unlimited entry visa to India and I am an American citizen- so far Pakistan has refused to give me a visa. One day, I hope! I really want to see K2.

People of Hunza and Skardu have almost no competition. Both get their good share of tourism. BTW thanks a million for visiting my hometown of Gilgit.
