I had a 2000 OBW (Outback wagon), best car I ever had. Ran it up to 292k miles before I sold it, and it was still going strong. I replaced the head gaskets once because they seeped a little oil and coolant to the outside, they didn't blow and never had a milkshake. I loved that car.

I used to junk cars, picked up a 91 legacy turbo 5spd ej22t, sat in a yard for 5 years and started right up with a jump and ran from the cops successfully three days later . so I can confirm this is true .

Only the old engines blew gaskets, they fixed that a while ago. The Foresters are the best ever vehicle.

This guy knows his stuff! I have one of these that was never cared for and constantly abused by myself (was a high schooler at the time I got it) and I can honestly say I’ve never had an issue with it. Also at over 300, 000 miles, it only burns about a quart of oil every 5, 000. Outstanding build quality that you just don’t see anymore on modern Subarus.

I got a 2012 outback as a family car and it was great for the milage we needed to put on it. Head gasket was leaking intermittently but never overheated unless it was at a stop for a long time. I think it it was 2200$ to replace. Not the slightest issue since then.

My parents had one of these when they lived in Japan and I was just a baby. It was old and owned by previous English exchange teachers and the car’s name was Old man

Head gasket issue was fixed years ago thankfully. My mom blew the hg on her 2005 Forrester some years back and I swore I’d never get one. Fast forward to the present and I now drive a crosstrek lol. Great cars.

I had a 98 legacy wagon with the 2.5. Ran it till 256k till head gaskets gave out. Ending swapping with a 3.0 flat 6.

Ive got a 1994 Subaru Wrx EJ20 2 ltr Turbo 5 speed Manual in my Garage with 389, 000 km on the Clock All Original Still Starts First turn of the Key 🔑 that Will Pin Most People to the Seat..
0 to 135kph in About 5 seconds 1st to third gear with 2 gears to Go..
The Fastest I've personally pushed it was 230kph..😁

The 1st and 2nd generation Legacy was Subaru's most dependable car they've ever made, in part due to the 2.2L H4 engine. Subarus best engine yet. They still run like new with 200k miles when properly cared for. Super dependable cars overall. It didn't get the sales and accolades it deserved compared to Camry and Accord. One of my top 5 favorite cars ever.

My 05 Outback XT (with the infamous exploding EJ25) hasn't blown a headgasket with 170k miles and some mods (including intake & exhaust with a dyno-tune).

The SOHC EJ251 and EJ253 are the worst problem engines, they are dogs and blow head gaskets all the time, they gave Subaru the bad reputation. The DOHC EJ25D is surprisingly satisfying, great power and that starts around 800rpm and pulls good up to about 4, 000 rpm. That’s a perfect around town power and add the 4.44:1 final drive on the five speed transmission and it keeps pulling every gear. Nothing short of an actual rally car can keep up with me in the deep winters of northern minnesnowta

The H6 cars were also super reliable. I currently have an 01 H6 with 280k on it and a 2011 with 220k on it.

They also blow headgaskets i had a 89 with blown gaskets. That was at 323k though. Super fun car to drive in the winter in a manual

The EJ22 is a non interference engine with good bearings and not enough hp or compression to hurt itself. It’s a wonderful engine but I prefer the EJ25D.

I had a 95 2.2 wagon automatic with 175k and the bearing went in the gearbox and sold it for 400 and found a 96 wagon automatic 2.2 for 1200 still driving it I like them ... be using subaru brand from 1979

Buy newer used and it is a non factor. The mythical head gasket problem was fixed with the release of the F series engine around 12 years ago.

To the best of my knowledge, only certain years of the 2.5 blow head gaskets every 100k miles or so…the rest of the engines are good, 1.6, 2.0, 2.2, etc…
