Insightful as always, did feel we rode our luck with the offside trap though that is the reward of the risk when you win 😎 UTV 👊🏻

Really happy w the win, expecially after an away game on Thursday. Felt quite similar to a few away wins last season. Decisive moments went our way. That does mean we need to improve performances to get more sustainable results. But this was a tough game. BTW on XG think Chelsea had a couple of chances flagged offside that weren't so won't show up in XG - esp Sterling one on one.

I actually think the passing network says a bigger story of the match.

Our shots that Sanchez had to pull off blinders to keep out were from low.xG positions, they had high xG 1 v 1s, you can't tell me they were closer to scoring from them.

The passing networks on the other hand show how most of Chelseas chances came from direct balls over the top, primarily on one side, that every defender and Martinez was expecting, 2/3rds of the time they were blown for offside the other times we managed to smother. The exception exception couple of great balls from Mudryk.

Villa controlled the pace of play for alot of it, passed around the press well and switched the ball across the wings to change up angles of attack and exert pressure.

I think either team could have won until the red card. And following it, we looked the more likely albeit still a bit nervy.

There were excellent beginning phases of play on the transition, but Zaniolo struggling to ind a pass (or looking for one) and failing to utilise the central runs Watkins was making (deliberate plan? maybe) lead to a loewr Xg. than one mmight have expected from the plays that we did generate.
They were simply falling down before the end play.
That was mostly because Chelsea were in large parts of the game bloody great at the back.
Poch really tried to ensure we couldn't hurt them before the red card. After that he went gungg-ho and there was only ever going to be one winnner.

On Watkins - I was trying to point out his work on the reddit live chat during the game. He worked his socks off, and did a thnkless job for the most part without complaint.
Couldn't ask for more from a striker.
I mean, seriously, that's what you'd be LOOKING FOR in a new striker....
Folks have just got to adapt their expectations of where and when they'll see him on the ball a bit, and follow the whole pitch where they can, not just the ball.

Anyway, loved it. Fantastic game, played out really well.

Unai taught Poch a lesson or two, and I doubt Poch was overly happy with Jackson or Stirling after 90mins, but he'll be grataeful to have lost this one to Villa - who chose to keep it 1-0 rather than punish them.

What do we think about our offside trap this season? I think we topped the league last year catching teams out 95 + times. Everything seems a lot less smooth so far this season (obviously no young, Mings or Moreno has a lot to do with it). Seemed better, if not faultless, vs Chelsea on the eye test.

No way do we employ a "rigid 4-4-2". That's a strange piece of analysis I must say. I feel like Gareth was just scratching around for something to say!
