After several years in exile the Swedish King Charles XII (Carolus Rex) tried to conquer Norway in 1716. When he besieged the strong fortress of Fredriksten at Fredrikshald (Halden) he was killed by a projectile in November 1718. Who fired the deadly shot right through the king's head is still unknown.
Charles' death marked the end of the Swedish Empire as a major power in Europe and the struggle for the Baltic Sea dominion (Dominium Maris Baltici), 1721 was the begin of the rise of the Russian Empire.

Nach mehreren Jahren im Exil versuchte Schwedens König Karl XII. (Carolus Rex) 1716 das dänisch kontrollierte Norwegen zu erobern. Bei der Belagerung der Festung Fredriksten bei Fredrikshald (Halden) wurde er im November 1718 tödlich am Kopf getroffen. Von wem die Kugel abgefeuert wurde ist bis heute ungeklärt.
Nach seinem Tod endete Schwedens Stellung als europäische Großmacht und das Ringen um die Vorherrschaft im Ostseeraum (Dominium Maris Baltici), 1721 begann der Aufstieg des Russischen Kaiserreiches.

I'm part Russian so I'm naturally glad Russia won the war, but I can't help but feel sad for him and his empire. He was brave, valiant and an inspiration to his nation, his death was the final blow for the Swedish empire. And whatever you think about him, he was a bit hard to deal with after all, you cannot deny he tried his absolute best for his nation and people. RIP Carolus Rex.
