Nick Gilder was born in London, UK and moved to Vancouver, BC in 1961 when he was ten. He first sang with a group named Throm Hortis and gained attention of several record labels. In 1971, Jim McCulloch asked Nick to create a band which they named "Sweeney Todd". Following the grand tradition of glam rock, they appeared in garish makeup and clothing utilizing flashpots and smoke machines. 1976 saw "Roxy Roller" getting the band onto the charts. Due to internal squabbling, the Gilder and McCullock bowed out of Sweeney Todd and headed to the US. After signing to Chrysalis, that label issued an immediate injunction against their former label for selling "Roxy Roller". That label fired back by issuing a new recording with a young Bryan Adams handling the lead vocals. Chrysalis issued a new recording of "Roxy Roller" from Nick Gilder and as a result, all three singles bombed in the US. In Canada, however, the song spent two weeks at #1 with the original recording. Gilder and McCulloch then attempted to pair up with legendary producer, George Martin but aborted the sessions once they heard the results. They had one collaboration with producer Stuart Alan Love which resulted in Gilder's debut LP " You Know Who You Are". Then he started work with Mike Chapman and recorded three songs, one of them was "Hot Child In The City" was inspired by teenage runaway girls he saw on the streets of LA. The lyrics were written from the perspective of a lecher who is trying to persuade "a streetwise Lolita" to leave with him. Chapman felt that another song, "All Because Of Love" would be a stronger single, but Chrysalis President Terry Ellis felt that "Hot Child" was the better choice and gave him his first #1 pop hit. Chapman got his second consecutive #1 hit in a row as it ended Exile's "Kiss You All Over" four week run at the top. Released June 10, 1978, it took 20 weeks to top the chart, setting a record for the amount of time to peak at #1.

This is my feel good song. I put in my ear buds and work in my yard and dance around to it. My neighbors think I'm crazy.

My mom, 49, always woke me up playing this or something like it. I’d smell bleach and knew I needed to get up for our cleaning/dance party time. She had another child when I was 12, (ill be 20 next month)… my little sister. We got her on the same routine and we enjoy it. Imagine us getting a call from the school telling us she disrupted class by humming Dolly’s “Jolene”

Oh my God my mom got me Nick Gilders 8-track for my 10th birthday! Along with the square yellow Panasonic 8-track player with the dynamite handle you would push down to change tracks. Oh how those were the days! 👍
