When I got my puppy, he was 9wks old, slept all night without an accident and never whined throughout the night. He was crate trained overnight and since then, he's now 3mo old, still sleeps through the night and has barked maybe 7 times. He doesn't bark, whine and already knows 6 hand commands and I trained him in one week for potty training and hand commands. He's very intelligent. Good boi!! 🎉

Puppies drink a lot of water because they get dehydrated easier. Therefore, they pee more. My puppy is 10 weeks old and I've gotta make sure he goes out every half hour still. This formula would never work for my JRT puppy! He plays hard, drinks and pees. I believe every puppy is different and they will not all adhere to the same rule here.

My dog will piss 3-4 times in the hour if he’s excited. Makes potty training hard

I got lucky- my puppies ever since they were little didn't like the idea of peeing in there "area" so they would bark until we take them out and go back to sleep afterwards

Respectfully, this could use some clarification… the amount of time they could physically ‘hold it’ is not the same as the amount of time it will take to have an accident.

Untrained puppies have no reason to hold it as long as they can. With no desired substrate preference yet instilled, why would you wait if you could relieve yourself now?

These rules are for overnight in crates where they will try their best not to soil their den. During the day the philosophy should be closer to, take them out often enough they won’t have anything in there to even give them the urge to make a mess.

Consistency and repetition with that builds the habit of eliminating on the desired surface and then creates aversion to inappropriate surfaces.

They need to go out after every time they drink, eat, or play. It’s not just about the length of time they can hold it

I never leave my dogs crated for longer than 4 hours during daylight hours. Preferably 3 hrs. I crate them for sleeping hours up to 8 hours during the night.

That was the most aggressive lip licking I’ve ever seen 💀

You are showing us a large breed dog with larger bladder. My 2 lb. puppy is 3 months old with a tiny bladder and can hold about 25 minutes max after drinking water. There is a difference in breed size.

What do you do when you take puppy out just before bedtime and they don't pee? Do you wait for them to pee? If so, how long? If not, if they pee in their crate, are they unlikely to want to go back in there? Thanks for your help for these new puppy people.

Thank you. I haven't had a dog since I was a kid and absolutely don't want to be the kind of owner I was taught to be back then. My dog was never allowed in the house (He might have been allowed in the unfinished basement when the winter was so bad that we spent the night near my mother's job, but I didn't think so. My mother believes that animals belong outside and are naturally OK out there. Don't tell at me, I figured out how wrong she is early in my teens (although she still threatens to throw HER cat outside (she lives on a highway) when she wants to upset ME).
I just want an idea of IF I want a puppy some day- Pretty sure I'd like to adopt a geriatric dog when I have a home though.

I feel like my puppy doesn’t follow this rule and goes every 30 minutes 😭

I feed my puppy at 8pm then take him out right after and at 10 and 12 pm/am. And he does not have a accident during the night, is it good or bad? (He is 4 months old)
