China said it was simulating "sealing off" Taiwan in a third day of drills as it appeared to use an aircraft carrier to launch jets towards the island.

Taiwan said it had detected jets to its east while China said its Shandong aircraft carrier had taken part.

Beijing began the exercises on Saturday after Taiwan President Tsai Ing-wen met the US House Speaker in California.

I'm no expert, but as far as I understand, there is a huge difference between an Air Defense Identification Zone (ADIZ) and actual 'airspace'. The ADIZ can extend out over international waters, and the defending country can request identification from any aircraft that enter it, but this is NOT the defending country's sovereign territory, and that country has no right under international law to obstruct the legal passage of aircraft from other countries through it. Actual 'airspace' on the other hand is the airspace over the defending country's sovereign territory, and that country has legal authority to regulate access to, and activities in, that space for any aircraft flying there, according to their own laws. This would include the authority to shoot down any aircraft that could legally be identified as having hostile intention.
I welcome anyone with more expertise to correct or refine this information, but it would also behoove BBC to brush up on their terminology and get the story straight if they wish to be considered a competent and professional news service.

It's very easy to seal off a country, island or not, when they are not shooting at you.

China has never governed Taiwan for even one single minute. Taiwan is democracy where everyone above 20 has a direct vote for president, while China is autocracy where Xi changed law to allow himself stay in power forever.

I'm sick of doing the bare minimum for Taiwan and saying it's "for peace". China has shown time and time again with Tibet and Hong Kong that if we give them an inch, they'll take a mile. Some world leaders let it slide because they're doing the same thing as China and some are just plain lazy. Imagine how the next generations will think of us doing next to nothing to protect our so-called ally

All and every 193 countries in the UN recognizes that there is only ONE China ..and this even includes the Constitution of the Republic of China, ROC ( For the BBC newscaster lesson ) the official name of Taiwan .
How then can China be flying into Taiwan airspace..which in the firstplace is just a internationally non recognized ADIZ...declared by Taiwan and secondly an island that is part of China s territorial integrity.
Taiwan is not China s enemy..the people of Taiwan shares the same language, religion, culture, Etnicity and even Family ties with China..and have very good relationship.

On the other hand, it's quite unwise to display all the strategies you may implement in a rehearsal which ultimately provides your opponent with enough time to find a solution before the real invasion.

1) In 1894, Japan invaded China and Korea, the Qing gov was defeated and signed the [Treaty of Shimonoseki] to cede Taiwan Island to Japan.

2) During the WW2, at the Cairo Conference held in 1943, China asked the transfer of Taiwan's sovereignty back to China after the war. This content was included in the [Cairo Declaration] and later reiterated in the [Potsdam Proclamation] that it should be implemented.

3) On 14 Aug & 2 Sept 1945, the Emperor and govt of Japan issued the [End War Edict] and [Japanese Instrument of Surrender], Japan surrendered and accepted the [Potsdam Proclamation]. The Japanese troops in Taiwan surrendered to KMT General CKS. Taiwan re-entered the territory of the Republic of China (ROC).

4) Soon after that China civil war broke out between KMT and CCP, the KMT was defeated and fled to Taiwan. However, due to US intervention, the CCP without strong navy at that time has no ability to unify Taiwan. The CCP then established the People's Republic of China (PRC) on 1949. The civil war

5) In 1971, UN Resolution No. 2758 ruled that the PRC had obtained the representation rights and all legal rights originally owned by the ROC in the UN. That means the PRC is China’s only legal govt under international law, and today the PRC also become China’s only legal govt recognized by 181 countries around the world, including the USA.
"The USA recognizes the Government of the PRC as the sole legal Government of China."
"The USA acknowledges the Chinese position that there is but one China and Taiwan is part of China."
Joint Cummunique on the Establishment of Diplomatic relations between the PRC and the USA in 1979.

6) Therefore, according to international law, international reality, and the wishes of the 1.4 billion Chinese people, Taiwan should return to PRC and the PRC have every rights to protect it's sovereign integrity.

Ironic isn't it? That it is considered "international waters" when it is really the South China Sea.

How would we feel if 60 miles off our coastline is declared international waters?

It doesn't matter how many times the Chinese regime repeats the *lies, *
or how *angry* it pretends to be,
- Taiwan 🇹🇼 is still a sovereign country.

Taiwan and China were originally one country. Taiwan and China belong to the same nation and have the same ancestors. Taiwanese are also Chinese. It’s just that Taiwanese came to Taiwan from China. Gradually, Taiwanese no longer call themselves Chinese. Some Taiwanese established the DPP, and now the DPP is in power. The DPP is unwilling to recognize China, and the United States is happy to see Taiwan split from China. That's how things are.

Taiiwan is part of China. during to the pass thousand years, the only reason why Taiwan is separating away with China mainland because of civil war in 1945-1949. Civil war cause the issue. no one can deny the fact that Taiwan is part of China.

This is EXACTLY how Ukraine was attacked by Russia in Feb 2022. Should we expect a "special military operation" next?

🕵 Taiwan's Average Household Income per Capita is $17, 000, China's only $5, 000. Taiwan's passport holders can gain Visa-free/instant Visa on arrival to 146 countries, China's only to 85. Taiwan has been producing the most sophisticated microchips in the world, China fully manufactured a whole ball point pen in 2017. Taiwan is the #1 most Democratic country in Asia and #10 in the world, China is nowhere on the list. I see why China would like to take Taiwan now that it's so smart, rich, and successful but why the heck would Taiwan be dumb enough to agree?

I remember Russia doing this during end of 2021 and then 2022. Today Ukraine is at war. Is the west not seeing the same thing happening already?
