hey, now that ukraine and russia are both using cheap baofengs officially, i think the UV-5R and other variants are now officially "cosplay"worthy

The ar-152 is seriously underrated. The extremely high capacity battery, strong tx power and sensitive rx, this is excellent for a wilderness/rural hiking/camping radio. The speaker is also on par with Motorola- bassy and loud with no distortion. Refreshing to listen to actually, unlike the much smaller uv-5r hissy and "tinny" sounding speaker. I like larger radios.. If you're wearing gloves. I loved the HTX-202's size and this reminds me of that. So far, lots of testing and it exceeded my expectations. This is nothing to do with pretending to have a Harris. This is just what it is. It's a great tool for what I needed. Period. The stock antenna is awesome too. Don't need a Nagoya.

Just another note on the Baofeng AR-152, if you program the radio using the factory software you can open up the 1.25m band.

It is unfortunate that all those Baofeng models are derivatives of the original UV-5R.
In the early days, Baofeng also released the UV-B5 radio which is not following this pattern. Some people guess that it is not really designed by Baofeng but is an externally designed type made in license.
This radio has a completely different user interface than the UV-5R. It has a rotary dial to change frequence, and a better display.
But most important: its receiver performance is much better. You can actually connect a roof-mounted antenna to it and still receive things, while the UV-5R will just be blown away and desensed by strong signals outside the band.
It is probably not economically interesting for Baofeng to produce derived products based on the UV-B5, but when you want a better handy it is certainly one to consider.
Maybe you should get one and compare it to the other types, especially when standing near to a transmitter site.

it looked like the radio you had for your action man when you was a kid.

The AR152 was originally supposed to be waterproof and the case is metal. I dont know if this is the actual end product but that is worth the added price if you want a more rugged version of the BF. Some of us WANT the OD green brick!

The AR 152 looks like. A cosplay poor mama version of the Harris AN/PRC-152

Must admit that the colour of the radio is a sort of hack green!
A rather appropriate SDR choice there Lewis!

I might try the TCA brand PEC-152A with the KDU unit add on. I have spots to put everything.

For those of us who DO have the AR-152... Any advice on which programming cable to buy and settings to use? Trying to program mine for use at a LARP.

I bought the 152 in a special 2 pack with 4 batteries and multiple antennas for $180 US. The price has dropped for some offerings. In my case, the huge battery capacity, larger screen being easier to see as I get older, and backlit and larger keys to help where big factors, and worth the extra in my opinion. Could I get a UV-5r cheaper? Yes. But once I buy 3 extra large capacity batteries per radio to match the massive ones for the 152, and extra antennas, the batteries alone where worth the extra cost alone.

But this is what suites my application best. Others may, and are welcome to make their own choices.

I was really wondering why anyone would buy the AR-152.

You're literally paying 3-4 times as much just for something that looks kind of cool.

I have the UV-5R with the flexi whip and works brilliantly

They have come down in price considerably AR152.... 40-60 dollars depending on options. There are better options. A big pro is the battery life. Guys can put this in their car or closest and store it until needed in an emergency. The biggest thing going for Baofengs is the price...They are cheap, they get new HAM's on the air, and they are essentially or stolen.

I mean it looks like it would fit in a mag pouch for an ar15 pretty easy
