I have rebuilt three of these engines over the years and they all have been the same as yours, seems to be the same problem some high end cars had with high sulphur content in the petrol destroys the nicosil, don't forget to check the aluminium bung on the crankshaft as someone else posted, stick with it they are fantastic engines when sorted.

Rockers look ok i'd run them, usually you can see transfer to the cams from the rockers if they have failed...

Hi Andy, it looks like it could be your problem. It flakes from the edges. I didn't like what I saw on your strainer. Check damage on the cams. Looks like new rockers. Keep it stock standard. Good luck

Hi Andy. I don't know what you did with the filming angles and techniques, but, hey, this vid was so dramatically improved I was thinking Cecil B DeMille should be eating his heart out. Your close-ups were tight. It looked good all over, and the work location was way better lit than the home garage. Keep up the good work. (added the word 'up').

The L shaped top ring is called a Dykes ring. Ducati tear down is very interesting. Thanks & Cheers.

Many air cooled engines don't have head gaskets. They are needed on liquid cooled engines primarily to seal the coolant passages.

Patience, care, skill and understanding: you've got them, I haven't 😁 Good work, Andy, and the best of luck with it. Great video.

I've found the videos very interesting as I've no real mechanical experience but enjoy learning more about bike repair and maintenance. Keep up the good work, all the best from Glasgow

I can't add any specific Ducati knowledge..more of a car engine builder, but very interesting Andy. I'd love a Ducati twin one day. Totally get why you would want to keep it original. Modifying can really escalate the costs as you say. Looking forwards to hear how the conversation with Gowenlock go and the way forward.

What a headache, I'd like to hear Matt from The Workshop give his opinion on the wear and condition given the low KMs, I struggle to reconcile prior bad treatment vs my view of Ducati from that period.

In any event thanks for continuing to post the videos and I hope you get it back in one piece sooner than later.

Hello Andy, to remove the pully nut i used an old open ended spanner jaw width about the same as the thread diameter, drill two holes that correspond with two opposing holes in the nut, cut the threads off two bolts that are a good fit and tack the heads of the bolts to the jaws of the spanner. I used the same tool to tighten the nuts with loctite and common sense and had no problems.

Andy, it was a known issue with some Ducati engines, that the rocker arms were chromed where they contacted the cam lobes, and would wear through, with rapid wear once through the hard chrome layer hard been worn through

Well that was not better news Andy.
Mine is still running beautifully, touch wood, but I have seen similar evidence on my strainer, and the more I dig into it the more I'm realizing how poorly it has been looked after in the past. I'm praying I don't end up in your predicament any time soon. Good luck Andy 👊

Great work Andy, keep your chin up & hopefully Gowies helps you out. I agree with you keep it stock but keep it going! I don’t think the metal pieces on the strainer will have caused the scratches. The oil has to go through the paper filter anyway as a final step. The strainer stops it from getting to the oil filter. I don’t think machine shop people worry about nicasil anymore. As long as you have good rings, pistons & running in procedures, you’ll be back to tip top control! All the best.

Great Vid's Andy, you explain the procedures in a common sense manner that is easy to follow. Truly learning about how to service / measure limits on a DUC.

Easy way to know if it is the chrome chipping off the rocker arms is to put a few of those flakes in battery acid, if they turn purple means the rockers are to blame.

At a guess maybe previous owner had starved it of oil. Too thick or didn’t change it at intervals. Worn out rings??and wall scoring scratches. ?? It’s still a very young bike yet at 12k miles.

Just found you on YouTube...Mate absolutely loving your channel! I'm actually restoring a "bevel" 900 S2, and I'm also using Gowanlock (I'll dropping my engine to them this Tuesday!) This is my 1st restoration and while the stuff you do is waaay above my pay grade, you give a layman like me some knowledge that I might be able to apply to my build. Again, great job and thanks!👍🍻

I really enjoy watching your channel, with all the work you are doing on the engine, I said, the hell with it and upgraded my old Ducati with a 2019 Monster 1200S, cheers :-)
