Today we'r reviewing Root, a game that I have recently become obsessed with. But is it something for your tabletop? Hopefully you'll have a better idea within the next 6-0 seconds.

4 for theme?? Its pretty unique… I don’t think thats fair. I didnt like the theme at first (I like “cooler” games) but its got a quaint charm.

Great review, but the 4 rating for theme bumped me slightly -- IMHO the game builds a very strong cohesive story through the interaction of all the factions, who are each very thematic in their individual mechanics.

With the new root RPG game out the theme score should be 10. The lore and work they put into this game and making each factions history properly be portrayed in their game mechanics is absolutely amazing

While your observation of where the satisfaction in Root comes from is spot on, I can tell you where the dissatisfaction in Root comes from: the chore of having to stop the Vagabond.

Rating theme to 4 and the first example of play being an illegal move on the Eyrie's part really speaks in volumes (You cannot move on the river unless the winter map is in use/if you've purchased the Riverboat from the Riverfolk)

Very interesting to play, interesting to try out the different roles but takes a lot of effort to understand before you can play well which I find more work than it’s worth

Almost a perfect review. A 4 for theme is just too far off the mark though. If this game isn’t a solid 8-10 for theme I don’t know what is.

What exactly do you mean by theme? In my opinion, the fusion of theme and game mechanics is incredibly good in Root. Each faction tells its own story. From the cats who exploit the forest dwellers by clearing as much wood as possible to expand, the birds as former rulers (bird cards are jokers) who want to reclaim the forest as a dynasty. The actual forest dwellers suffer from this war between cats and birds and form an alliance to start a revolution from below, but first have to convince other forest dwellers of their cause, spread sympathy and carry out their military actions secretly at night (that's why they have so few units, are so good at defense and can only recruit, move and attack at night)...and so on... Even the individual hand cards tell stories. So the game/world really captivated me thematically.

4 for theme??? How do you personally score theme? Based on uniqueness? On art? Or what

You don't review a theme based on if you like it but based on how well it's incorporated. The theme in Root is 10/10, it oozes out of every crevice of the game. If it's too cute for you that's ok but don't say it's poorly themed.

(You can't use rivers as paths, only the Riverfolk can do that)
