I've always struggled with reeds, where do you get them from?

Do the time reeds need to soak in water vary? I've had some reeds that would play very smoothly even after soaking them for a few seconds but other reeds would play the best after I soaked them for around 5 minutes. This might just have to do with the reed qualities, though.

If i dont have a reed case, would it be okay if i use the normal case it comes with? Reed cases where i live are ~80 dollars
