Jamaican Usain Bolt sets a new Olympic record as he retains his 100m Gold medal at the London 2012 Olympics on the 5 August 2012.

Fellow Jamaican Yohan Blake finished second, with USA's Justin Gatlin taking the Bronze medal in the event.

Since 1896, athletics has been on the programme of each edition of the Games of the Olympiad. Its presence on the Games programme has allowed its popularity to increase across the world. This popularity was also strengthened by the creation of the IAAF in 1912. Women's events appeared for the first time at the 1928 Olympic Games in Amsterdam, while the men's programme was standardised as of the 1932 Games in Los Angeles. Although at the beginning women were authorised to participate in only some events, today their programme is almost identical to that of the men.

The fact that there are still people watching this nearly a decade after the race happened just goes to show how legendary this race is.

Running 9.80s got you 4th place.

This is undeniably the most legendary 100m field ever put together.

This lineup was insane.. There is not a faster collection of runners, in one place, at any point in history..

What I find crazy is that these guys go through years of training, gym sessions, track sessions, early mornings, diet regimes, physiotherapists, massages, sweat, tears, just to name a fraction of their journey....for what ultimately comes down to 10 seconds of effort. Everything they worked for, all their hard effort, their dreams, goals, etc. Can either come true or get crushed in 10 seconds. True athletes.

GREATEST field of sprinters ever assembled. 4 WR holders in one race! Don’t believe we’ll ever be privileged to witness again. Blake ran 9.75 & was 2nd! Let that sink in ⚡️ 🇯🇲 💪🏽

For perspective, Noah Lyles would have placed 5th in these finals after his recent victory in 100m. I don’t want to hear about Bolt’s record being in jeopardy ever again.

This race contains the five fastest men of all time. What an era!!!! They’d own any other era quite unfortunate for the other sprinters

Wow. Usain Bolt: the one of a kind sportsman where no matter what country you're from, you just want him to win, because he's that incredible.

Its insane how a guy can just accelerate past 3 of the other fastest men in history like they were running in slow motion. We will never see a guy like bolt never.

That 2008-2016 era might be the best era ever in pro track and field.

In my opinion, this race was Bolt’s most important to solidify him as one of the greatest athletes of all time. This lineup was incredible, he was challenged all year and he still gave his BEST performance at the biggest stage with world class charisma. LEGEND!!
