The world is filled with secrets. Secrets meant to harm, to protect, to make money off of. Governments, companies, private individuals. Everyone keeps secrets.
And whenever there exists information that isn’t meant to see the light of day, there will always be people who wish to steal it.
The hacking industry is a constant battle fought not on a field, but over the internet and in the very places that we live and work. It is a billion dollar industry. McAfee estimates that it costs the world nearly $600 billion dollars every year, and that’s just money that is stolen. That doesn’t include all of the systems and employees that are put in place to stop it.
It might be surprising, but criminals are really the least dangerous type of hacker. They’re like burglars, committing the act of stealing from people for their own personal gain. If they can get in and get out without hurting anyone, that’s the best outcome possible.
A much more dangerous hacker exists. These hackers aren’t interested in stealing money. Money is inconsequential to them. They have bigger fish to fry. They are interested in stealing secrets. And when you steal secrets, you rob the victim not just of their present possessions, but of the potential of the future.
Secrets can bring a country to its knees.
So let’s say you want to steal some secrets. Where might you go looking for them?
The answer is easy: government organizations and large companies.
Now, hacking one organization is a lot of work. Information Technology Administrators have put together systems that are meant to keep you out. They even invite white-hat hackers to try to break into their systems so they can find the holes before you do. They have firewalls, two-factor authentication, servers kept deep beneath the ground with no access to the outside world.
Hacking all the organizations you want to would take a lot or work, and more importantly, time. Time that you don’t have.
